Youths Arrested In Attempted Break-In
Three juveniles were arrested in Clarinda after police thwarted an attempted break-in at Hy-Vee store. Paul Dean Coltrain, 18, Des Moines, confessed to multiple burglaries including Villisca Fruit and Grocery. A 17-year-old Des Moines boy and a 17-year-old runaway girl from Kansas were also involved. Police tracked the trio via Coltrain’s 1947 Cadillac sedan and chased them from an alley to a nearby street. The suspects reportedly admitted to breaking into several local businesses Thursday night.

IRA D LONG, 87, died at Wallin Nursing Home in Clearmont Missouri at 7 am Friday after seven years as an invalid. Funeral held at Walker Funeral Home with Rev Waunelta McConnell officiating. Indiana Driver Fined for Reckless Driving Saturday
David Eskridge of Kakoma Indiana was fined 25 dollars and costs by Justice R J McCurdy for reckless driving after a report that his car crowded Guy Fults off the highway east of Clarinda. Eskridge was stopped at Shenandoah and brought back to face charges. Emery F Johnson of Webb City Missouri was sentenced to 15 days work on city streets for intoxication after lacking funds to pay a fine.

Farm Loan ALS'N Pays 10 Percent Dividend
The Farmers National Farm Loan association of Clarinda announced a ten percent dividend this week. Four hundred and fifty four farmer stock holders in Page and Taylor counties will receive checks totaling $11,086, J D Loudon secretary-treasurer reported. The dividend funded by the Federal Land Bank of Omaha supports the cooperative, owned entirely by local farmers. Directors include Lenox Kent Thornell, George Crawford, Milos Hughes, and Herman O'Dell.

John W Taylor a 26 year old Shambaugh painter faces district court trial on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He was arrested by Clarinda night police at 1250 am Sunday and waived preliminary examination before Justice R J McCurdy. He was held in county jail Monday morning in default of a 500 dollar bond.

Three Collisions Friday Saturday Reported
Three minor automobile collisions were reported by L D Potter acting chief of police. On Friday at 4 15 pm a 1952 Mercury owned by Claire Hicks was backed into by Richard Jones a 29 year old Clarinda painter causing about 48 dollars in damage to the right side. Fern W Heerman 17 Clarinda was driving Hicks’s car. Jones’s 1947 Chevrolet was dented on the left rear fender. On Saturday at 9 30 am a backing car hit a parked car occupied by Mrs Donald Swanson 48 Clarinda on 9th St near Washington St causing about 75 dollars damage to the left front fender and door. Darwin White 18 Willisea backed from a private drive. his 1941 Dodge was undamaged. Mrs George Sleight 29 New Market drove north on 16th St when Anna Wright 20 Clarinda nurses aid struck the rear of Sleight’s car about 50 feet south of Washington St at 3 15 pm causing about 100 dollars damage to the front end of Wright’s 1954 Ford a Howard N Smith property. Sleight’s 1947 Chrysler was undamaged.

Clarinda Mayor Robert Criswell Dies After Stroke
Mayor Robert L Criswell aged 72 died Monday at a Clarinda hospital from a stroke suffered weeks earlier. A hardware salesman by trade, he was elected mayor in 1958 for a four year term the first under Iowa revised election laws. He is survived by his wife at 211 West State Street. Councilman Robert Smith served as mayor pro tem during his illness as the council seeks a temporary appointment until January and an elective official to finish the term this fall.

Clarinda Kiwanis members traveled with 13 Kiwanian and 11 ladies to Hamburg for a club meeting at the Presbyterian church. Page County Fair preps for advance ticket sales
The Page County Agricultural fair organizers announce an advance ticket sales plan for August 10 to 13. Jim Stephens, fair association president, says 44 people requested to help, with 32 serving as township cochairmen. Clarinda will run a separate committee led by H J Morgan to solicit downtown. The advance books offer six admissions for five dollars, usable by up to six people, valid for any night during the four day event.
