Vote tabulation announced by Oscar Engstrom shows in each township the top three vote-getters chosen for chairman vice chairman and member with alternates. Terms start Aug 1 and chairmen and vice chairmen will attend the county ASC convention at Claryinda July 30 where county officers will be elected.
Mrs Delilah Williams, 93, died at her Hepburn home after an extended illness. Funeral service held at Walker Funeral Home with Mr s T Fessler officiating. Burial in Butler cemetery. Survived by four children including Elsie Mae Carlson of Battle Creek and Andrew Williams.
Lions International notified the Clarinda Lions Club that it won the district prize in the 1954 55 membership contest after leading its zone in January. The award is a portable speaker stand bearing an 18 inch Lions emblem in six colors.
Miss Clarinda 1955 Kevin Oberlin and Miss Iowa 1950 Virginia Lines Meyer attended the Lions Club meeting at Linderman Hotel. Oberlin, entered in the Miss Iowa Pageant at Clear Lake July 29 31, sang two numbers and was presented by program chairman Jack Douthit. Dell Harlan joined as new member, inducted by Russell Hall. Ron Bronsema joined as Taylor Pharmacy employee. President Bob Caswell announced the family picnic for August 29.
Clarinda Junior college dean James Browning announced six more prospective freshmen for fall. From 1955 Clarinda High school grads Mildred Gust Fred Jeffrey Lynette Lightfoot and Jack McCall join 17 spring graduates planning to attend CJC. Ruth Nance, Northboro high 1955 alumna, also listed. Five frosh expect to return as sophomores in teacher education, including Dean and Gene Bentley Mary Lou Damewood Richard Parsons and Phyllis Chubick.
The town of Blanchard plans a $3520 tax levy for 1956, up from $3350 last year. Proposed expenditures total $5050 with an estimated $650 unencumbered balance and $900 other income. Public hearing on August 11 at 8 pm in the mayor’s office.
Clarinda was one of 25 towns honored by the National Safety Council for 1954 no traffic fatalities. Plaques were presented at ceremonies in the state senate chamber and in Atlantic Creston Red Oak and Shenandoah among larger towns receiving awards.
Extension agronomist Cliff Spies says most oat discoloration this year is natural and not a disease. He notes three varieties Cherokee Nemaha and Bonham show most cases and advises hull testing since groats remain unaffected in most instances.
Wilson six horse Clydesdale hitch arrives at Hy Vee on Saturday from 2 to 4 pm. The team stands tall at 17 to 18 hands with heavy gear and an origin dating to 1917.

The Herald Journal reports the county needs $694 000 to raise by taxation for 1956 an increase of $61 000 over 1955. Proposed 1956 expenditures total $1 285 500 the highest since 1952 with an unencumbered balance of $190 500 at year start.
Herald Journal news writers from 20 miles in three counties attend a correspondents picnic at Clarinda picnic park at 6 30 pm. Sixteen writers with guests tour the plant 5 6 pm and enjoy shop talk, a short program, and table activities before dinner hosted by the Herald Journal staff.
Accident at Marshalltown last Thursday nearly cost Leland Hutchinson his right foot while supervising an air compressor installation for Standard Oil. He held the 500 pound machine as others cleared, the ankle bone severed yet tendon and flesh intact. doctors believe the foot can be saved. Parents of Mrs Hope Hutchinson, Mr and Mrs Bill Mack, visited at the Deaconess hospital.
Mrs Shambaugh gifts Page County 4-H girls with a crystal punch bowl and cups for the Mother daughter tea each fall. The 4-H committee and Marjorie Burch extend thanks to Mrs Shambaugh for the donation.
Edward Blume of Clarinda Iowa has been invited by Valparaiso University to attend the second annual campus convention of the Valparaiso Advisory Council on August 5 and 6. Blume was appointed by Dr O P Kretzmann to serve as a council member representing congregations of Synodical Conference Lutheran churches.
Martin Wagoner Sr longtime Page county resident died at his Clarinda area farm at 5 am Wednesday from coronary thrombosis. Funeral at St John’s Lutheran Church Friday at 2 pm with Rev Discher. Otto Funeral Service in charge. Burial in Immanuel cemetery. He left a wife Elizabeth four children Dorothea Margaret Harry Martin Irene Mellencamp Ruth Van Fosson and six grandchildren.
Mrs Delma Marquardt of Clarinda and a Northwest Missouri State College graduate at Maryville was elected to fill a vacancy as teacher in the Shenandoah grades per the Omaha World-Herald.
About 621 people attended the open house for the new gas office of Iowa Electric Light and Power Co in Cedar Rapids. Hosts Mrs Hilton Graham and Mrs Jim Tisdale served cookies with coffee in a “cooking with gas” display room. Winners of door prizes included Mrs Eva Knowles, Mrs Good Night, Mrs Alfred Crawford, Mrs L E Finley, Darlene Hayes, and several gift certificates.
Dan Meyers Construction Co of Shenandoah won the Valley Heights sewer extension bid with 1 2 1 9 4 7 50 undercutting two other bidders. City manager R H van Deusen says Boundary Street sewer work nears completion with backfill and cleanup pending and the deep 24 foot manhole at 20th and Boundary noted.
Roy McCorkle near Hepburn reports a 5 percent acre oat field yielding 572 bushels at 104 bushels per acre and another 10 acre plot averaging 80. Lyle Eden, FB YP member, confirmed field size and total bushels.
Kiwanis members at the Linderman Hotel heard Mrs Ann White outline Clarinda Junior College's new practical nursing program with 10 enrolled and a 15 minimum. three men among enrollees. Superintendent Joe Burnham discussed ongoing school system progress and future student housing needs. Dr Elmer Freeland announced a Kansas City Athletics representative will speak next week.
County Engineer L N Hoppock announced that oiling of Page county trunk roads began Monday with asphalt application by Gendler Stone Products Co of Des Moines near Northboro. The 1955 program covers 4 miles in total.
