First step toward creating planning commission approved
City Council gave first reading to an ordinance creating a seven member City Planning Commission at the July meeting. The panel would be appointed by the mayor with council approval for five year terms and would elect a chairman and vice chairman annually. The ordinance also schedules staggered terms and outlines annual reports and powers under state law. No action on mobile home parking was taken. The council approved sewer extensions and ordered construction.

Man Hospitalized From Bad Beating
William Osborn a 34 year old county truck driver remained in serious condition at the Veterans Administration Hospital Omaha after a beating July 3. Police Chief C E Reynolds said Osborn reported returning home at 9 30 pm Tuesday and being struck with unknown assailant losing 23 dollars from his shirt. He was treated at Municipal Hospital and later transferred to Omaha Hospital with possible internal bleeding and need for surgery uncertain.

Clarinda fared better than Red Oak and other southwest Iowa towns as Saturday night’s storm delivered 1.32 inches of rainfall, with a weekend total at the waterworks of 2.01 inches after Friday night’s 0.69 inches. The weather station logged temperatures from 58 to 89 degrees, with Monday morning at 62, and nine foot moisture at 3.45 inches.

Hopper Spray Distribution Planned by Page County Board
Page County voters will receive grasshopper spray for farmers starting Tuesday at the county maintenance garage on EK State St on a first come first served basis. Each person may obtain up to one quart enough to treat about six acres at a half pint per acre. Participants sign an application, bring their own container, and labels will mark the spray as poison. A fruit jar is recommended. The distribution will continue while supplies last, with possible additional shipments from the state.

Razing of McKinley Building Set to Begin Monday
