Connie Stewart aged 19 of Shenandoah was crowned Miss Southwest Iowa at the Lions Club sponsored pageant in Clarinda. First runner-up was Martin, second runner-up Johnson, with ten finalists competing for scholarships, gowns, and a trip to Clear Lake for the state pageant. Stewart will represent multiple counties at Clear Lake and potential Miss Iowa, with the winner advancing to Miss America in Atlantic City.

Overwhelmed County Signs Up For Soil Bank Program
County farmers flocked to the ASC office to sign up for the soil bank program as township committeemen completed acreage yields. Office staff report crowds jammed the lobby and extended outside on Saturday and Monday, with all employees signing up farmers. Farmers must meet or terminate agreements by July 20 to avoid penalties, including a 50 percent civil penalty for willful noncompliance.

Soil Experiment Farm marks 25th anniversary near Clarinda
About 450 people attended the observance of the Soil Experiment Farm's 25th anniversary west of Clarinda on a dry June day. Demonstrations highlighted forage harvesting with flail-type harvesters led by Dale Hull, then at 11:00 Earle Raun and Hull discussed corn borer and pest control. Raun described a new granular insecticide noted for deeper penetration.

A full Fourth of July program is laid out at Clarinda Country Club starting with morning golf events for men. Teams play best ball while a giant skin game runs for all men golfers. An accuracy test at 3:30 features a 55 gallon drum 1506 yards out with prizes for hits. A women driving contest around 4 pm leads to a husbands and wives putting contest. Darrell Woodard Rites Set For Tuesday
Darrell E Woodard 51 died in a head on collision near Defiance Indiana while returning home to College Springs. A 19 year old driver lost control on a highway curve causing Woodard’s car strike. He suffered fatal injuries including broken limbs. Funeral services scheduled 2:30 PM Tuesday at College Springs Methodist Church with burial at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Rainfall Cuts Hauling By Farmers by Sixty Percent
Intermittent rain in the latter part of June reduced hauling by farmers to the city waterworks by about 60 percent according to Supt Wayne Fuller. Weather station records show 2.01 inches in the past week, with higher totals in surrounding areas. June total was 3.65 inches toward a 5.99 inch normal, while the first six months of 1955 reached 16.08 inches, slightly above normal. Drunk Driver Sentenced to Three Years at Fort Madison
Arval Winslow age 42 of Cherokee pled guilty to OMVI third offense. Judge H K Davidson sentenced him to up to three years in the men's penitentiary at Fort Madison. Winslow’s license shows three prior drunk driving convictions, making this a fourth offense. He was to be taken to the penitentiary Monday by the sheriff. Also in district court, William T. Kirk of Shenandoah waives preliminary hearing on a threat to kill charge against Dorothy Kirk and is held on $200 bond. A petition from Joe M King seeks to enjoin Mr and Mrs Donald Rogers from disposing of three Shenandoah properties amid a divorce settlement and planned California move. King aims to appoint a trustee for two minor children.

Pace County Democrats held a county party convention at the Courthouse Friday night to name delegates to the state and district judicial conventions and to elect county central committee officers. H J Teachout was re elected chair man with Mrs Jim Tinnell as vice chair man and Ben Brown as secretary treasurer. Dale Hughes was named chairman of the party in East Page County. Delegates were chosen for Des Moines July 31 and for the district judicial conventions, including Neal Rastofer Tom Cutter George Woodle Mrs Frances Bradley Mrs Jim Tinnell Gorman Howell Leo Gardner and others. Additional delegates T W Keenan Paul Nichols Fred Lindburg G W Brown and Frederick Fischer were named to both conventions with ten junior delegates listed for state convention.
