Trail family loses home in Essex area fire
The Gene Trail family’s tenant house eight miles east of Essex burned to the ground late January 20 as the Trails were visiting relatives. Neighbors found the blaze, leaving Mr and Mrs Trail and their three children to stay at the Paul Wenstrand farm in Nyman. People have donated clothing and household items at Falk and Hultman store in Essex.

Three Icy Street Collisions Reported in Local Police
Three motor vehicle collisions occurred on icy streets Friday and Saturday, caused by loss of vehicle control. Darlene Johnson and Wearen E Jones were in a two-car crash on E Washington Street. damage to both 1956 vehicles was noted. Ralph M O'Connell and Leroy R Grieve collided near Clarinda Cemetery with $62.67 front-end damage to a 1947 Chevrolet and Grieve cited for failure to control. Isobel J Bloomfield faced a similar charge after crashing into a parked truck at the Gaservice propane facility on S 8th Street.

Two automobiles were damaged in a collision on Highway 71 a mile south of Clarinda Sunday around 5 pm, per Page County Sheriff Stanley Edgar. Ola Johnston 50 of Clarinda and Gary Kelley of Clarinda drove south, Kelley turning left at the Page Center turn-off. Johnston’s 1955 Plymouth sustained extensive left front damage. a 1948 Ford suffered minor damage.

Fire destroys haystack on Franklin Mellencamp farm
An arsonist set a haystack ablaze on the Franklin Mellencamp farm north of the State Mental Health Institute Sunday morning. About 2,000 bales burned. no buildings were at risk and no fire department was called. Sheriff Edgar will investigate with possible state assistance this week.
