Eleven Cub Scouts of Pack 203 received awards at the monthly pack meeting in Fellowship Hall First Methodist Church. Rural eighth graders toured the Page County Courthouse as part of Citizenship Day learning how county government works. Treasurer Paul Isaacson and Deputy Sheriff Tom Cumming explained office operations and law enforcement displays while Judge Harold E Davidson led a mock trial.

Rites Monday for Smalley's Father
C E Ed Smalley 84 died Friday at his son Clarence V Smalley's home in Shenandoah. He moved to Clarinda last July after a stroke and to Shenandoah in 1918. He worked as a farmer and carpenter, later clerking until retirement in 1947. Survived by wife in nursing home, son Clarence, daughter Eva Putnam, Shenandoah. Relatives from Cedar Falls and Oklahoma attended or planned to attend.

Two Shenandoah youths die in highway collision
Two Shenandoah youths died from injuries after a car rammed a large truck on Highway 71 a quarter mile north of Grant Saturday. John F Blane Jr 19 died instantly and Jo Ann Swanson 18 died Sunday in a Council Bluffs hospital. Trucker George Ginger of Council Bluffs was uninjured. Swanson was a student at Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville.

Harold D Thompson radioman apprentice USN son of Mr and Mrs Owen Thompson of Route 2 Cla rinda Iowa serves aboard the destroyer USS Stormes. The Stormes took part in first flight operations at sea for USS Forrestal acting as plane guard off North Carolina then steamed nearby during landings and takeoffs before overhauls at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Anna B Shields 64 of Council Bluffs died Jan 16 after a two year illness in a local hospital. She was the mother of Mrs Thurman E Russell of Clarinda and formerly lived in Illinois before moving to Iowa 18 years ago. Burial was in Cedar Lawn Cemetery and she is survived by several daughters and a son plus other relatives.

Mrs Thornton told the Rotary Club that Clarinda Municipal Hospital is big business with monthly disbursements of 17 600 to 20 000. She noted 7 000 in purchases from local firms, 3 800 paid locally, and salaries for 69 staff members. The 17 year old hospital runs around the clock with 12 active and 5 consulting doctors, a medical library, dietitian training, nursing school cooperation, and a six unit pediatric department. Harold Siedenberg’s Dogs led the attendance with solid make-up reports on opening night.

Police reports detail two minor crashes on icy streets in Clarinda. At 2:15 pm Thursday, Carl A Bengtson and James E Hunter collided at 18th and Logan, causing $43.45 damage to Hunter’s 1951 Plymouth. On Sunday at 9:45 am, Lyle M Cassat and Bobby Joe Smith collided at 17th and Chestnut, with Cassat’s 1951 Mercury sustaining a damaged right front fender and hubcap while Smith’s 1946 Ford had no reported damage.

Four 4 H Leaders to Be Recognized
Taylor County 4 H leaders Roy Selley Villisea H G Penton Clem Land Ben Anderson New Market will represent the county at the sixth annual State 4 H Leaders Recognition Day at Iowa State College Ames on January 30. Extension director Maclyn LaRue accompanies them. Only four leaders and one extension worker attend from each county. The event is organized by ISU agricultural and home economics extension with support from the Iowa Chain Store Council Inc The program includes talks by extension staff and a presentation by Black Hawk County staff. County officials Barger and Esbeck will report on rural family surveys and how the extension program adapts to rural nonfarm part time farm and rural families The banquet will feature Helen LaBaron and E M Morgan speakers.
