Nadine Martha Buch, daughter of Mr and Mrs H H Buch of Clarinda, is named January CCCer of the Month. The 1959 Clarinda High School graduate aims to teach English or science and also works as College Choir secretary, cheerleader, and box office clerk at the Clarinda Theatre. Colorado man dies of leukemia at Denver hospital
Cleason Emert 40 died January 6 in Denver after transfer from Sterling where he sought treatment for acute leukemia. Survived by wife Mildred two sons Ronald and Walter mother Lena Emert two brothers Hugh Jr and Raymond all in Sterling. Local relatives noted Lena Emert formerly Lena Clement and Dale Clifton Clements as uncles to the deceased.

Iowa road fund formula faces gradual shift in shares
The 11 member Road Study Committee approved a new distribution plan starting 1962 to favor municipalities less yet with a sliding scale through 1965. Municipalities get 0 percent in 1962, rising to 12 percent in 1963 and 14 percent by 1965, while primary and county shares adjust. The plan splits funds 40 percent per capita 60 percent need based, with counties using 60/40 for need and area. A bond proposal for a $300 million interstate program was favored, funded by road funds and 90 percent federal aid. Chairman Nolan cited natural growth to support construction. Other actions include abolishing current license-fee reductions after five years and maintaining two cents of the gasoline tax for gravel and widening projects. Congress? Hoegh resigns as civil defense director and Eldora appoints Travisono as superintendent of the Iowa Boys Training School.
