Page County 1960 road program approved by commission

The Iowa Highway Commission approves a $667,357.28 budget for Page County secondary roads in 1960. About $103,311 goes to new construction, with most funds for maintenance and oil surfacing of trunk roads. Several bridges are slated for replacement using salvaged structures, and about 14.91 miles of roads will be resurfaced or graded.

Gillette tops Clarinda holiday decorations contest

Bernard Gillette won the sweepstakes prize for the annual Clarinda holiday decorations contest with an over the top Santa scene. He built the display using old washing machine parts and a motor to rock Santa with his feet in warm water while a cup of tea rests on the table. Stockings hung on a mantle he built near the porch wall and a deer figure hitched to an old cutter completed the humorous display that drew cheers from onlookers at 16th and Nishna Street.

Celebration and tragedy mark Bert Gray family event

On Monday December 28 the Bert Gray family faced joy and loss as the couple celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary and Mr Gray's 88th birthday, while son Vern Rex Gray, 61, died in a highway crash near Muscatine. Vern, en route home from Bettendorf, skidded on an icy hill on highway 41, his car bursting into flames. bystanders pulled him from the wreckage. Several relatives from distant towns were unable to attend due to hazardous roads. Vern leaves a wife and six children. The tragedy follows a spate of recent highway deaths in the family, including a granddaughter's death last fall and another sister’s death in November.

Outgoing president notes Clarinda Kiwanis club 1959 work

President Merle Stevens summarized Kiwanis projects in 1959 at the Linderman Hotel. Gorman Howell presented tables to Charles Hutchings for seven years of perfect attendance and to Armon Fitch and Hans Morgan for four years. Highlights included transportation for health patients, National Kids Day events, a 310.80 pancake drive, 4-H/FFA counseling, 4-H camping fund, rural school photo contest with $25 prizes, conservation awards, Junior Police support, canteen financing, milk and books for needy children, Easter egg hunt for 2500 eggs, a night party after the junior-senior banquet, a $100 foreign student fund gift, and reactivating Circle K at the junior college plus three junior college scholarships in 1959.

Adult farmers evening school resumes meetings Monday

Neil Johnston announced the adult farmers evening school series will resume Monday January 4 at 7 30 in the FFA chapterhouse south of the high school. Chuck Greenlee ISU farm manager will discuss current farm management problems. Estate planning and other topics to follow. program ends February 15.

Sister of Paul Freed Dies in Minneapolis Home

Mrs Walter Lindquist fifty seven, formerly Mildred Freed of Essex, died at her Minneapolis home December 21 after a long illness. Survived by daughter Naomi and sister Miss Hilda Freed, with brothers Paul Freed of Red Oak and Harold Freed of Carthage South Dakota.

Justice court fines for reckless driving and double parking

Proceedings in justice court named defendants James D Branan and Larry Mohler each fined $25 for reckless driving with December dates. Kennard Tomkins and Benny L Gage were fined a dollar each plus costs for double parking.

Iowa Power & Light seeks 25 percent steam rate hike

Iowa Power and Light Co asks the City Council to raise steam heat rates by 25 percent. A new rate of 1.95 dollars per thousand pounds would apply for the first 80 000 pounds, with 1.64 dollars for each additional thousand. The company cites annual steam heat costs around 50 000 dollars against income slightly over 12 000.

Wendall Kuethe of Trivoli captured a rare feast weasel during a hobby transfer. The full grown mammal weighed three ounces and measured seven inches in length, a notable catch for local wildlife enthusiasts.

Lions Operation Toy benefits 45 children

The Clarinda Lions Club sixth annual Operation Toy helped about 45 underprivileged children, averaging five gifts each. Gifts came from many donors and were distributed at Operation Toy headquarters in a Lin derman Hotel vacant store on Dec 3. Volunteers from Young's Rest Home and the State Mental Health Institute repaired and painted toys over two Saturdays. Gift certificates were provided for teenagers. Committee members include Ben Shore, Lawson Miller, Robert Renshaw, Tom Reed, Wallace Bauman, Mike Caviness and James Erwin.
