County survey shows 274 occupied farm homes off surfaced roads, with 1 765 on surfaced routes and 2 159 total farm homes. Overall 64 1 percent of county roads are surfaced, with township figures detailing miles surfaced and percent occupied homes on surfaced roads for each area.

Services Thursday for Beryl Strong

Funeral services were held Thursday for Cheryl Strong 63 insurance man of Clarinda who died Tuesday at Municipal Hospital of a heart condition. He moved from a farm to Clarinda in 1934 and built the Hooker insurance agency later joined by Jack Bridie. Surviving are his wife, three sons, two daughters, three brothers, a sister, and 11 grandchildren. Interment was in Clarinda Cemetery. Walker Funeral Home in charge.

Lights and Cheer For Mental Health Inmates Rides

Christmas rides in private cars brought holiday cheer to 230 patients at the Mental Health Institute. From December 19 to 21, 50 cars supplied by the American Legion, institute staff, and volunteers carried patients to see town decorations. Home parties were hosted by Gray Ladies Women’s Club St Dymphna Society and former staff, with 25 Y Teen members assisting as hostesses and cookie helpers.

Burning Papers Threat Forces Fire Response in Clarinda

Firefighters respond to 118 N 19th St in Clarinda after burning papers from an incinerator triggered grass flames near the Smith residence. Incident occurred Monday afternoon as flames threatened nearby property and required swift containment by local fire crews.

Two 4-H Leaders Workshops Set at Griswold Hall

Weed control topic at Clarinda farmers evening school

E P Sylvester of Iowa State College will discuss weed control at the Clarinda Adult Farmers Evening School tonight at 7:30 in the FFA Chapterhouse near Clarinda High School. He will cover cultural and chemical methods in corn and is known as a plant pathologist and botanist. The event is sponsored by the Clarinda evening school and Page County Extension Service. all are welcome.

She reports greetings from six states where former USO guests now reside and notes fruit gifts from California and letters from Washington State Illinois Michigan Minnesota and Ohio.

Clem C Yates Dead at 78 in College Springs

Clem C Yates, 78, died at his home in College Springs on Monday afternoon December 23 after a five year illness. Born May 22, 1879 in Burlington Junction Missouri, he was a farmer and longtime resident of College Springs. He leaves wife Mabel, son Burdette Yates, daughter Pauline Yates, three brothers and three sisters. Funeral was held at United Presbyterian Church with Pastor J D Almes officiating. interment in College Springs Cemetery.

Three Break-Ins Reported Sunday Night Here

Police report three break-ins Sunday night in the city. Modern Cleaners lost a suit jacket and trousers while Blanche's Coffee Shop near the fire station was entered and eight dollars in change taken. Richardson's carpenter shop was entered with items possibly left untouched. Entry to Modern Cleaners was through a back door after window pane was broken.

Indian psychiatrist Dr Natarajan speaks at Kiwanis meeting

Dr R Natarajan, newly arrived from India and a psychiatrist at the Mental Health Institute, spoke to Kiwanians about life in India and the United States. Dr H Frenkel was program chairman, with L N Hoppock in charge for the next meeting delayed by holidays.
