Glenn A Carlson of Essex is the low candidate for Page County deputy assessor announced by county assessor Louis ih. Carlson was one of eight who took the state exam. The examining board recommended his appointment, and the County Conference Board approved. Carlson is a retired farmer with years of service as a field assessor and former two terms as president of the Page County Farm Bureau. He has recently been linked with the Fremont County Farm Bureau Insurance Service.

Sunday evening on Candle Light Lane near W Stuart St 1724 cars were counted traveling up the hill. Residents placed 296 cs along four blocks from 18th St West. A lighted star stood at the top of the hill and carolers from the Presbyterian Sunday school sang once. Marvin Waldruff thanked residents for their cooperation in the second year.

Thirteen neighbors spent parts of two days repairing a barn on Mrs Miller Dunn’s farm southwest of Clarinda. They lifted the structure and added new posts. Clarinda Junior College reported the lowest dropout rate among Iowa’s 16 public junior colleges for 1958-59, with high costs and enrollment trends discussed at the first regular joint meeting of the Clarinda Independent and Community school boards. Finance figures through November showed 219 257.91 spent and 216 409.79 received, leaving a small balance. The boards invited five rural district representatives to January’s meeting to plan space use as the community district forms. A coordinator for the practical nursing program was to be hired with a salary range of 4650 to 5500, and Sinn Kryselmire and Isaacson joined the salary study committee for 1960-61.

At end of November Iowans had invested 129,803,901 dollars in United States savings bonds, reaching 84 percent of the 1959 goal. The national average was 79 percent. C E Bradley of Clarinda reported November county sales of 95,644 dollars, giving 1st month total of 1,370,849 dollars for 88 percent of the annual goal. John Sprague, 25, Omaha, was fined $100 and costs for failing to stop at a stop sign in a fatal two car crash near Clarinda. His father in law Harlan Fry, 51, Clarinda, died in the collision at the Y east of the city Sunday. Mrs Fry, 51, and Frank Snyder, 22, both of Clarinda, sustained minor injuries. Gerald R Hickman 22 was sent to Anamosa State Prison for up to three years after pleading guilty to arson of a motor vehicle in a Shenandoah farm incident. Harlan Lasley 18 received up to five years for grand larceny but was suspended to parole for finishing high school. Bernard R McDowell got 50 days for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and a divorce decree was granted to Gladys Racine with child custody split.
