The Herald Journal announces a Christmas greetings issue to be mailed in the Clarinda area on Thursday December 23. News submissions are urged by Tuesday before 10 am and classified ads by 11 am. No paper on Monday December 28. next issue December 31. Carrier delivery Wednesday afternoon.
Mrs Augusta ie Herzberg 83 died Sunday at her home after a stroke. Born September 15 in Page County near Clarinda, she lived her life in the area. Survived by two sons Har Herzberg Amos Herzberg both of Clarinda, two brothers Ed Wagoner and rs Wagoner, two sisters Mrs Sunderman and Fred Jensen, 11 great grandchildren. Funeral services are Wednesday at Williams-Foster Mortuary 1:30 pm then 2 pm at St John’s Lutheran Church, with Rev. W H Ischer officiating. Interment Immanuel Cemetery northwest of a.
Bernard R McDowell of Clarinda is charged in County District Court with a driving offense after a pickup owned by Ray S McDowell struck two cars at the Conoco station on 17th and Washington. He waived examination. $500 bond posted. McDowell's companion was fined $100 for intoxication and $5 for permitting an unauthorized person to drive.
Christmas worship began in many area churches Sunday with morning service and special evening programs. Scheduled events include December 23 at Blanchard Methodist Siam Methodist Shambaugh United Methodist New Market Methodist First Church of God Sham baugh 7 30 pm Christmas Cantata at Coin 7 30 pm and Christmas Eve services at Bethesda Lutheran Guss Methodist Fremont Covenant at 11 pm and 8 pm respectively.
The 135 voice Messiah chorus will join the Brass Choir directed by Richard Mowery for an 8 pm Monday concert in the high school auditorium. Soloists include Dale Noble and Barbara Crawford with new additions to the chorus and a live KFNF broadcast.
Clarinda Methodist and Trinity United Presbyterian hold evening services at 7 p m. St Pauls Lutheran Yorktown hosts 6 30 p m at St Johns Lutheran with a 7 p m service. Christmas Morn First Assembly of God opens at 7 am followed by St Johns Lutheran at 10 am.

Twenty five shoppers received free gifts including turkeys and two large hams during a two week goodwill event by Clarinda merchants. Funeral services were held at Advent Christian Church in Villisca for Gary G Bran an 16 who died at Municipal Hospital Dec 14 from injuries in an auto crash 12 miles northeast of Clarinda. He was a Villisca High School sophomore, an honor student and active in sports. He is survived by his parents James and Linda Branan, a brother and sister at home, and grandparents. Interment was in Guss Cemetery. Sutphen Funeral Home led arrangements. His brother 19 and friend Dennis Fastenau 16 remain hospitalized.
Larry Stephens 18 of Taylor County is one of six Iowa 4-H members chosen for a grain marketing conference in Chicago January 12 to 14. The winner, son of Donald and Mrs Stephens, has nine years in 4-H with projects in corn oats hogs and leadership roles in the Calvary Go-Getters Club. Iowa State and the Chicago Board of Trade fund his trip with adults Erick Nilson and other delegates joining to study grain marketing and tour grain facilities.

Fremont Farmerettes 4-H Club received the State Club Health Award certificate from Marjorie Burch for their active health program. Members underwent physicals eye and dental checks while most took Red Cross swimming lessons and practiced health demonstrations. The club supported community health through water testing, pest control, cancer drive envelopes, and tuberculosis seals.
Mrs Myrtle Perkins aged 79 was struck by a train as she walked to visit a friend in Villisca Friday. The Des Moines Register reports the fatal accident occurred during dusk with bystanders assisting and the train crew investigating.
Borthwick earns dean’s list honors as son of Mr and Mrs Karoot wick. Clarinda joins term on honor roll with Sees Canin as a noted student.
Proceedings in Justice Court list multiple cases with dates in December. Katheryn Moore cited for unattended vehicle strike with license issue, $21 fine. Ray S McCowen charged with intoxication and permitting three drivers, $100. Dennis G Phillips cited by highway patrol for out of state license and related offenses. Robert W Wilcoxson fined for failing to stop at a red light. Leo J L Girard charged with intoxication and fined $25.
Deputy Sheriff Tom Cumming reports five break-ins across Coin and Blanchard on Friday night. Four Coin businesses and one Blanchard pool hall were entered, with about $75 in cash, eight cartons of cigarettes, and a 50 dollar find. Entry used a quarter inch pry bar. a padlock lay unlocked near a Coin door. Blanchard pool hall had a broken transom glass.
Mrs John Milleson reports the death of her aunt Mrs Albert Libby Miller in a San Bernardino hospital. Ill for eight years, she lived in Clarinda before moving four years ago to be near family. Survived by husband two daughters two sisters two brothers nine grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Preceded in death by son Charles B Casey. Member of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Clarinda.
Benjamin Dukesheir, 55, of Red Oak, lost control of a 1955 Chevrolet pickup, left the road on N 12th Street, rolled in a ditch and stopped against a hedge post. He was bruised but not hospitalized after being taken to Municipal Hospital for examination. The cab sustained extensive damage.
Dorothy Worm, jailed for second degree murder of husband Tommie Worm, is released from Rockwell City women’s reformatory after 13 years of a 45 year sentence. The husband disappeared in November 1943 and was never found. Henry Schmitt remains jailed in Fort Madison for his involvement in the case.
A new beef heifer performance testing program is offered to Page County 4 H members. Extension assistant Russell Breedahl says the test helps select fast gaining, typy cattle to build a profitable breeding herd while still in 4 H. Steer calves from top heifers are expected to become excellent beef cattle.
The Trinity United Presbyterian Church hosts its annual Christmas Eve candle lighting and carol service Thursday at 7 pm. The choir, led by Mrs Helen Hall Hoskinson, performs an anthem after meditation by Dr J D Almes, with the moment of lights symbolizing the Light of the World and the distribution of "The Light." High School girls act as candle lighters, and the white gift offering aids human suffering worldwide.
Will weigh baby beeves December 30 and 31 at Page County sites including Soil Conservation Experimental Farm Frank Powers Farm and Clarin da Auction Co from 10am to 2pm. Iowa Heart Association honored 351 communities with pocket edition "You and Your Heart" books for health libraries. Dr L W Swanson of Mason City announced the awards, highlighting the guide as one of the most interesting and complete on heart health. Immanuel Lutheran Parochial School near Clarinda also received an award.
Harlan Fry 51 of Clarinda dies from multiple chest injuries after a Sunday two car collision at the Y east of Clarinda on Highway 2. Three others injured include Mrs Jessie Fry and John Sprague. Fry was a hospital patient, drivers include Sprague from Omaha.
Rev Discher will move in January with arrangements not yet fixed. The Estherville congregation, pastorless after their minister left for an Ohio church, plans a new church building. He will remain vice president of Iowa District West and continue Lutheran Camp on Okoboji work.
Two young Shenandoah residents, Donald E Williamson and Darrell C Gibler, face Page County District Court charges of lascivious acts with a child. Transcripts filed, informants allege sexual relations with two girls aged 13 and 14. Both waived preliminary examination and are jailed on $1,000 bond each.
