Officers siege Barnes with tear gas at Day Home
Hilmer Barnes 43 was arrested after a two hour siege at 612 North Th street as officers used tear gas and a .22 rifle battle to arrest him for assault. Children told how Barnes beat their mother and forced drinks. Barnes surrendered about 3 45 am. He faces assault and resisting arrest charges. Mrs Day not charged. The incident followed prior criminal activity dating to 1928 including a lengthy federal swindle case and recent parole.

Council Bluffs Nonpareil editor A M Piper blasted the state sales tax and the Tax Commission, urging elimination of the extra half percent and investigation of the commission. Piper charged taxes push Iowa’s young people to leave as business taxes rise. Tax Commission defender William G Murray cited 1954 reforms, while Senator Heide man praised equalization efforts and assessor training.

Shenandoah Policeman Plans Appeal to Supreme Court
Shenandoah police officer Harry Fithen, defendant in a suit by Delbert Slater of Red Oak, announced he will appeal to the Supreme Court after a Page County jury ruled against him. Slater claimed Fithen wrongfully arrested and beat him with a blackjack during Shenandoah’s Homecoming parade on Oct 8, 1954, with damages set at $5,917.90.
