Turkey drawing renews for Clarinda families next Thursday

In Clarinda, nearly 1000 residents braved rain as merchants host a turkey drawing with 30 boxes from local stores. A second drawing with two hams will follow, naming all participating households and listing donors from Arts to Woolworths.

Entry Deadline Extended for Clarinda Home Decor Contest

The second annual Clarinda home decorating contest extends entry deadline by one week. Residents may submit entry blanks to the chamber office by Friday December 18. Decorations must be lit from 6 to 9 pm through January 3 to be eligible for prize trophies.

New Market Plans Annual Chicken Throw Event

A community group led by New Market firemen and the Lions Club will sponsor the annual chicken throw on Saturday starting at 1 pm north of Clark's Store with Santa arriving around 3 pm to hand out candy. Local officials and merchants decorated a live Christmas tree for the event in the yard area south of the lumber yard. Funeral services were held Monday for Amanda Lawson aged 98 at West Portal Nursing Home with interment at Memory Cemetery.

ISEA field service director speaks to Taylor educators

Raymond D Stephens director of field service for the Iowa State Education Association spoke at a dinner gathering of the Taylor County Education Association at the Christian Church in Bedford Wednesday night. About 70 persons attended to hear him on The Principles of Salary Scheduling. At the business meeting educators voted that the Iowa Retired Teachers Association should have representation on the Executive Board of the Delegate Assembly of the ISFEA.

Farm census half finished in area

The 1959 Census of Agriculture is about 50 percent completed in this area. Acting Field Director Percy R Millard from the Census Bureau in Kansas City cites good cooperation from area farmers and aims to finish canvassing within 10 days. He notes field canvassing is costly and urges remaining farmers to fill questionnaires for prompt completion.

Navy radar man returns to Long Beach after Far East cruise

Robert Pritchard radarman second class USN son of Mr and Mrs Robert Laetee of Clarinda Iowa returned to Long Beach California aboard the heavy cruiser following six months with the Seventh Fleet in the Far East.

Villisca youths die in early morning crash

Gary Branan 16 of Villisca died after a car driven by him and two brothers left a gravel road southeast of Villisca. James Dale Branan 19 suffered a fractured pelvis and Dennis Fastenan 16 had a severe head injury. The accident occurred between 1:00 and 1:30 am. all three were hospitalized in Clarinda.

Tarkio College aids Marshall Hall fire victims with clothing and funds

Clarinda volunteers delivered clothing and a nearly $200 check to Tarkio College after Marshall Hall burned. Trinity United Presbyterian Church and donors sent support, totaling $1,795 from three states, to cover immediate needs and travel home for 44 students and their house mother.

County 4-H Hosts Shenandoah Party This Saturday

The Page County 4 H party will be held Saturday at Liberty Memorial Building Shenandoah at 7 30 p m. Berry Seed Co employees boost fund with two thirds goal push

Berry Co employees contributed heavily to the Clarinda Community Fund campaign surpassing two thirds of the $16 500 goal as 49 workers at the Hoeva office worked overtime and a company check from President Charles Sinn raised the total past $12 300. A mail campaign was approved to support 12 benevolent organizations with 400 to 500 past contributors yet to donate.

Fatal accident near Shen sparks two $145000 suits

Page County reports its first fatal motor vehicle crash of 1959. Mabel L Kramer of Shen files two petitions in District Court seeking a combined $145,000 in damages against Darr ell Spencer and Dennis Spencer of Clarksdale and Charles M Fisher of Stewartsville. Kramer alleges the southbound truck veered into the Kramer car causing the head on crash that killed Sylvester J Kramer, 61, on January 13. She seeks $95,000 for the estate and $50,000 for personal injuries.

Rites set for Herman Fesenmeyer 95

Funeral services will be held Tuesday for Herman Fesenmeyer aged 95 who died Saturday after a long illness. Born November 25, 1864 in Germany, he lived in Clarinda and is survived by two sons, four daughters, a sister, 13 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Interment will be in Clarinda Cemetery with service at Williams Foster Mortuary.

Iowa Salting 3393 Miles In Winter De-Icing Plan

Iowa State Highway Commission lists 3393 miles to be salted this winter as part of an eight-route de-icing effort. Major routes include east west US 34 6 30 20 and north south US 75 69 65 and 61 with Highway 71 treated between US 34 and Atlantic. Regular maintenance crews will also perform plowing patching painting and mowing.

Collision near Coin injures youth in hospital

A crash near Coin Sunday at 1 45 pm left one youth hospitalized. Dale Jamison, 16, and Edward Smith, 17, both of Coin, drove 1955 Studebaker and a 1950 Chevrolet respectively, sideswiping on a gravel road crest. Smith’s car rolled, totaling the vehicle. Jamison's damage estimated at 250 dollars.
