Southwest Iowa legislators met in Atlantic with Raymond C Gibson directing a study urging regional community colleges to link post high school education to Iowa's labor needs. Dean Lawrence Sonneman pressed for site briefs while outlining four college functions including transfer studies counseling in service training and terminal degrees.

Gas plant manager Hilton W Graham dies at 63

Hilton W Graham 63 longtime manager of the local gas plant since 1937 died early Monday after a long illness. Funeral services set for Wednesday at 10 am at the First Methodist Church. He lived in Clarinda and had served with Iowa Electric Light & Power. The company and local office will be closed all day Wednesday.

Scouts Name Mahaska District In Honor Of Peaceful Chief

The Boy Scouts of District 4 adopt the Mahaska name honoring Chief Mahaska who sought peace with whites and Indians and was killed near a site south of Clarinda. The change, approved at Essex, takes effect immediately and covers Clarinda Red Oak Shenandoah and nearby towns.

Doris Ann White wins 4-H production testing champion heifer

Doris Ann White of Villisca displays the champion Angus from her family's herd in the 4-H production testing project guided by Russell BreDahl. The winning heifer posted a 2.42 lb daily gain and ranked high in type among 24, with Elton Sir Erica 5th as sire and Lady Bandolier McHenry W13 as dam. Gary Alcorn took second place, and the field included John Stephens Alan Meyer and Vincent in top placements. Premiums were funded by Almquist and Anderson Feed and Miller-Tomlinson.

Creators and Conductors Help Creston Festival Concert

Clarinda High School student musicians joined Thursday’s Creston festival concert where 130 musicians from 16 area schools performed before a large crowd. Richard Mowery, Clarinda instrumental director, helped plan the event as Frank A Piersol of Iowa State University conducted the massed band for his second year. Officials praised the concert as among the best in the Little All-State festival series.

Dr Edward Martin dies. long‑time optometrist of Iowa

Funeral services set for Tuesday in Clarinda for Dr Edward L Martin 73 who died Friday after a hip fracture. An Iowa optometrist for 50 years he helped found the profession here and practiced with his son and others. He leaves wife Marie two sons and six grandchildren. Interment in Clarinda Cemetery with Masonic rites.

Farm pond owners warn of thin ice skaters

Early skating on farm ponds raises concern as youths, including College Springs residents, use ice before it thickens. A C Arendsee of Crystal Lake posts his four ponds to keep trespassers off after finding boys and girls on ice up to 14 feet deep.
