Walter Sales Named New City Manager in Early January

Walter Sales a 30 year old Bozeman Montana administrator will assume duties as city manager here in January after a unanimous City Council vote. He succeeds R H van Deusen who resigned to become township manager in Mount Holly New Jersey. Sales a former Bozeman administrative assistant with a wartime army background studied at Montana and Purdue and served in Germany during the Korean War. His wife Shirley Sue and daughter Mary Stacy will move with him from Bozeman. The council president pro tem presided in the absence of Mayor Hemphill.

Drotar Fined 300 for Drunk Driving in District Court

Harry J Drotar pled guilty to a drunk driving charge in District Court before Judge Harold E Davidson. He was arrested by police at Shenandoah on Oct 13 and released on $500 bond.

Scouting Winter Camporee Brings Iowa Troop 202 to Wakonda

Clarinda Troop 202 and Red Oak scouts attended the district winter camporee at Camp Wakonda near Griswold. Six Clarinda scouts plus leaders camped in tents in snow temps as they cooked, hiked, and enjoyed skits and services, earning a winter camping patch.

Page County sheriff reports no trace of a 1955 Chevrolet owned by Mr and Mrs Arlo Hawley stolen Saturday night. The loss may be linked to another car theft in Lenox that same night, according to deputies.

Indian Guides Organizational Meeting Tonight at Church

Career Day Draws Four Hundred Forty Seniors Across 21 Iowa Schools

About 440 seniors from 21 southwest Iowa high schools attended Clarinda High School Career Day. Speakers included ISU extension specialist Dr Glenn E Holmes and Superintendent William A Anderson. Heavy Mortar Company to undergo federal inspection

The Heavy Mortar Company of the Iowa National Guard will be inspected at Glenn Miller Armory on Friday. Lt Norman Annan, commanding officer, said administration and the armory inspection start at 1 pm with personnel and training at 8 pm. An inspector from Fifth Army in Chicago will lead, with Col Edward Reynolds of Villisea among visiting officers.

Municipal Hospital and Mul Staffs Hold Joint Meetings

Beginning this month theClarinda Municipal Hospital and Mental Health Institute will hold joint medical staff meetings. Dr Karl Catlin, superintendent, announced that cases will be reviewed at the monthly dinner meetings. The first gathering will be Monday Dec 16 at 6 30 p.m. in the Mental Health Institute employes cafeteria, with host duties alternating between the two facilities.

Dr Karl Catlin, superintendent, says no state board survey is planned to see which Clarinda Mental Health Institute patients should not be committed. He notes ongoing case reviews, admissions screening, and that surveys by outsiders would be welcome.

Clarinda to Host Y Spring Co-Ed Conference

Clarinda will host the annual Spring Co-Ed Conference for the southwest Iowa YMCA district. Paul Isaacson announces planning with Harl Holt Jr of Atlantic. Principal meetings at First Christian Church with other churches assisting feeding visitors. Last conference here was 1952 in Red Oak.

Mental Institute Staff Member Killed in Crash

Miss Henrietta Pell 47 recently joined the Clarinda Mental Health Institute as director of rehabilitation and was killed in a Sunday automobile collision near Platte City Missouri. Chester Robbins 57 of Kansas City suffered rib and leg fractures. Pell had been arranging rehabilitation contacts and spent two days weekly at Council Bluffs. Surviving relatives include her parents and brother Roy Pell. Funeral arrangements not yet made.

Auto accidents reported in Clarinda after ice

Two automobile crashes were reported in Clarinda Saturday night and Sunday morning. Willard Herzberg, 20, lost control on ice on N 15th Street striking a power pole, damaging a 1949 Ford owned by Harry Herzberg. Ronald Hamm, 20, slowed for a turn on 16th Street when a truck driven by Gerald Downd, 36, struck the rear, injuring the left side of a 1950 Ford and damaging the truck’s right front fender.

Burmood Rites Set for Sidney Resident

Special report notes Peter Burmood aged 78 died of a heart attack Thanksgiving morning in Sidney Nebraska after visiting his sister-in-law Mrs Rhoda Brenneman. He leaves wife Hilda of Bridgeport Nebraska and daughter Karol, married to Glenn Sherlock, SAC airman at Salina Kansas. The Burmoods lived in Shambaugh in 1948 and 1949.

Antonia Sidoriwicz Joins Clarinda Mental Health Staff

Antonia Y Sidoriwicz will join the Clarinda Mental Health Institute psychiatric staff starting January 2. She comes from the Nebraska Psychiatric Institute in Omaha and is funded by expansion of professional staff approved by the Legislative Interim Committee on Budget and Finance Control. The institute plans six new offices and two wings for staff use in the administration building, with occupancy expected early next year.

Two Injured In Car Truck Collision Near Pace County

On a gravel road a mile south of Goldenrod and three miles east of Highway 59 in Pace County two men were injured in a Sunday morning crash at about 9 30. Ieck Parmele of Northboro drove an International semi while PRD Dunham of Westboro Mo drove opposite. Dunham was hospitalized at Fairfax Mo with five broken ribs. his 1955 Chevrolet was a total loss. The trucker had a sprained leg and broken blood vessels but was not hospitalized. Sheriff Stanley Edgar assisted in the investigation.
