City approves final zoning ordinance and creates seven member commission

City Council adopted City Ordinance No 463 on final reading to establish a seven member zoning commission with staggered five year terms. The planning commission may be integrated by council action though zoning and planning are separate by law. A budget amendment was approved with no tax effect for 1956 taxes in 1957.

Double Rites for Former Residents

Death notices arrive for Harry Endsley and Gertrude Miller, siblings raised in Clarinda. Endsley, 66, died at Sun nyslope Sanitorium Ottumwa after lung illness. Miller, 68, died in St Joseph Missouri from a heart condition. Dual funerals at Walker Funeral Home Clarinda with burials in Clarinda cemetery. Mrs Holmes in Omaha visiting family when word arrived.

Delinquent Tax Sale Sells 112 Properties in Page County

Page County completed its annual delinquent tax sale with 112 properties sold under Iowa law requiring the county to bid on parcels in arrears. Elmer Gee led purchases with 19 farms and 31 town properties across Braddyville College Springs Shenandoah. Other bidders included Elbert Read and wife from Shenandoah and Page County Savings and Loan plus Opitz and Tunnicliff from Clarinda.

Local Masons Elect Knight Templar Officers

Knights Templar lodge held its annual election on Tuesday naming officers for 1957 at the Shenandoah Masonic Temple. W Dean McKie was chosen eminent commander with Dale Hughes as generalissimo and P G Osterholm as captain general.

Clarindans Plead Guilty To Assault

Three Clarindans pled guilty to conspiracy to commit rape in District Court at Sidney. Rex Edwards 25 Jack Scroggs 23 and Dick Martin 19 faced an assault charge involving a 16 year old Shenandoah girl in Fremont County on Oct 18. They pleaded before the Grand Jury as scheduled. Judge Bennett Cullison set Jan 5 for sentencing with $5,000 bond each. The girl faces Juvenile Court action.

Surplus Foods to be Distributed in Page County Next Week

Charles Burks announces the second distribution of federal surplus commodities to Page County indigents. A 27 126 pound shipment will be packed by Clarinda Lions Club at Wilhholm Hall at 7 pm Thursday. Distribution runs Monday at 9 am in Clarinda Shambaugh Yorktown Hepburn. Braddyville Blanchard College Springs Shenandoah Coin and Essex locations follow on Thursday with start times listed. Only cost to the county is freight from Des Moines.

Mrs W C Fisher Buried Sunday Former Clarinda Resident

Mrs W C Fisher, formerly of Clarinda, died November 30 at her Chariton home after a heart attack. She was widow of Dr W C Fisher who died in 1942. Survived by two daughters and a son, with services held Saturday at St Andrews Episcopal Church in Chariton.

Clarinda Woman among National Crochet Prize Winners

Mrs Henry L Higgins of Clarinda Iowa earned honorable mention in the luncheon cloth class at a national crochet contest run by the National Needlecraft Bureau. H G Penton of Bedford won first prize as male crochet champion, a 62 year old farmer who self taught crochet over 30 years and has produced more than 300 pieces.

Two Car Crashes Near Siam and Clarinda Kill and Injure

A one car crash near Siam killed Walter Long 66 and injured three others. He lost control on a ditch bank east of Siam at 6 15 pm in a 1946 Ford. Four more of a family were hospitalized after a crash east of Clarinda on Highway 2 around 8 30 pm. Calvin Gregg 29 and his wife Fern 28 suffered severe injuries. a 7 month old baby was hospitalized with fever.

The Condemnation of a Mount Pleasant wing leads to 35 extra patients for Clarinda Mental Health Institute with 100 patients to be moved by chartered bus to other Iowa facilities. Abandonment was ordered by the Iowa Board of Control after a survey by engineers. A new wing is under construction but won’t be ready for 18 months.
