Christmas home rule decorators prize contest in Clarinda

The Clarinda Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee runs a city wide contest offering five prizes for home and apartment Christmas decorations. Prizes include a toaster or similar appliance. Entries must be postmarked by December 14 and decorated homes will be judged on artistic merit lighting and originality.

Santa Makes First Visit to Clarinda Business District

Santa arrives by sleigh in Clarinda for a pre Christmas visit as hundreds of children queue to greet him. He will offer free sleigh rides this Saturday from 2 to 4 pm and a 10 am movie on Dec 17 with candy at his house 2 to 4. He plans store visits from 2 to 5 pm on Dec 24 the day before Christmas.

Fire alarms trigger sprinkler fault and backyard blaze

Clarinda volunteers were sent to Page County Home at 1:30 pm after a sprinkler head in the attic triggered a false alarm and flooded the building across three floors. A second call near 7 pm to the John Hunter residence reported a trash fire that scorched a power pole and fence, with the hydrant frozen.

Amity man struck by car here Friday

Samuel FE Dougan a 62 year old State Highway Commission employee from College Springs was struck by an automobile while flagging traffic on Highway 71 near the A and W Drive In. He received a concussion and multiple contusions and was hospitalized with improving condition. Rotary youth speaker recounts world trip via film

Three Men Face Drunken Driving Charges in Page County

Three men stand trial in Page County District Court on operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated after last week’s arrests. Harry Sorenson, 285 percent blood alcohol, waived preliminary exam and posted bail after a prior October offense. Wendell F Hurst, 350 percent BAC, denied comment and waived, held on bond. Richard York, .270 BAC, waived prelim, released on $500 bond pending trial.

Coin store block gutted by Sunday fire in Iowa town

Fire damaged the Coin market in a block fire Sunday afternoon gutting the back of the Har vey Thomas Sr. store in a building owned by Mrs Ollie Williams. Aileen Woolsey noticed smoke around 1 pm. The post office next door moved valuables to a drug store. the post office reopened Monday. Insurance covered the stock. the building had no insurance. Local volunteers contained the blaze. nearby departments stood by.

Guthrie County Couple Named New Page County Home Stewards

Mr and Mrs George H Steggs, 57 and wife, were announced Saturday by Edward Rhoades Jr as the new matron and steward of the Page County Home at the west edge of Clarinda. They move from Guthrie County where they headed the county home for five years and bring extensive institutional experience. A separate note states the postal service will issue a John Foster Dulles memorial stamp on December 7, Pearl Harbor Day, in purple similar to recent issues honoring great Americans.

Ten-County Assessor Group Tours Institute in Clarinda

Southwest Iowa assessors from ten counties met in Clarinda for a formal session and a tour of the Mental Health Institute. Guests of Assessor Louis Barr and Deputy Glen Carlson toured the Institute with Superintendent Karl Catlin and staff. Death of 13 year old McNutt at Iowa City

The 13 year old son of Mr and Mrs Clarence McNutt of seven miles southwest of Clarinda died Sunday at University Hospital Iowa City after periodic illness. He had been flown there Saturday by Schenck Flying Service. Survived by three sisters Karen Sharon Judie and a brother Randy at home. He attended South Page schools. POW Dinner Marks 14th Villisca Observance

For Pearl Harbor Day the Villisca Legion presents the annual POW party at the Villisca Legion Hall. Symphony orchestra formed to present Messiah in Clarinda

A newly organized orchestra from southwest Iowa and northwest Missouri prepared for the Messiah performance Monday at 8 pm in the Clarinda school auditorium. George Gerberding learns his mother in Quakenbruck Germany has died in a local hospital. Survived by sons George of Clarinda and Gustav of Quakenbruck a granddaughter Mrs Mary Ann Van derholm and her husband Robert plus two great grandsons Chris and Paul of Villisca. Mr and Mrs Gerberding visited her in August 1959.

Weather balloon instruments found on farm east of Clarinda

On a routine trap run Friday Milford Smelter discovered a weather balloon and parachute on Floyd Hurdle farm east of Clarinda. The orange parachute and attached instruments likely came from Omaha and had been reported missing for days.
