Family Duets Win At Iowa State Fair

Two Page County families dominate the Iowa State Fair livestock events. Ann Livengood and Ronald Livengood win 4-H and FFA Corriedale ram and ewe and multiple placings. Joe and Mike Henderson sweep 4-H swine breeds and FFA swine championships, including Tamworth and Yorkshire divisions. John Straight earns a blue ribbon in 4-H heavyweight fat lamb.

Charles Cason Jr age 16 drowned in a pond on his parents farm near Conway while swimming with two younger brothers. He would have been a junior at Clearfield High School. Send Herald Journal society and local news to LI 2-2181.

Gas lines torn from home by street grader on North 13th

Gas lines to the Clyde L Anderson home were yanked out Friday when a city grader working on a curb and gutter project on 13th Street hooked the service pipe. The meter inside the house was pulled through the wall, but no pilot lights were on and damage is limited to bent pipes and the water heater connection. The Andersons were away on vacation.

Tax Body Recommends Boost in Junior College Aid

Iowa Taxation Study Committee orders a bill to raise general state aid for public junior colleges to 180 dollars per student yearly replacing the current 45 dollar level. Clarinda Junior College highlighted as part of the proposal which would place two year schools under the State Board of Regents.

Nine Juveniles Admit Entry and Damage at Rural School

Nine youths aged 14 to 17 admitted breaking into a rural school six miles southeast of Shenandoah early Sunday. Deputy Sheriff Tom Cumming and Chief of Police John Keenan tracked tire marks. They broke in through the front door, damaged window lights, tore books, and damaged a piano.

Threshing veteran William Fust marks 60th event near Fontanelle

Near Fontanelle William Fust took part in his sixtieth annual threshing at the family farm. Now 85 he has helped thresh there since about 1896, a long running farm tradition.

Fatality Ends Long-Standing Record In Page County Crash

A three car collision Sunday near Clarinda on Highway 2 killed Warren R Marpe 35 Lamont and injured his wife Marjorie Dorothea 34 and two New Market youths Ronald Darling 17 and Billy Brown 17. Police say Edward Anderson 15 drove one car, attempting to pass, and struck the Richey’s car causing a chain crash involving the Blake vehicle and the Marpe vehicle. The incident ends a more than year long traffic fatality record for the area.

Marching Band Plans Early Fall Practice in Clarinda

Clarinda’s marching band begins fall drills a week before school opening under director Richard Mowery. About 115 members report, including 16 in the color guard and pom pon squad with new uniforms in progress. The group eyes Creston Band Festival, state contests, Red Oak parade, and Maryville College band day with dates to be announced.

Lady Born Slave Dies at 106 in Clarinda

Lizzie Oldham 106, a former slave born in Kentucky, died at her stepson Charles Oldham’s Omaha home. Widow of Charley Oldham, she lived in Clarinda about 50 years and was AME Church member for four decades. Burial at Clarinda Cemetery.

Quick Dive of Bystander Saves 3-Year-Old in Lake

Ed Desch spotted Jackie Fugle slip from a motor boat into Schencks Lake. He dived in to rescue the three year old as the parents, Mr and Mrs Jack Fugle, stood on the boat’s far side unaware of the fall. The child emerged unharmed.

Methodist Ministers of Page County Plan Sept 7 Meeting

Page County Methodist ministers will meet at Clarinda Methodist Church on September 7 to discuss plans for emphasizing local church work in coming months. The session is called by Creston District superintendent Rev Dr Claude W Cooper with a general Methodist emphasis on local church work over the next four years. Couie Sisters Return From Sudan Mission Service

Two sisters end 73 years of Sudan mission work and retire in Clarinda with a third sister joining them. Una Couie received a Royal Africa Society medal in 1955 for devoted service. Mary Couie completed 35 years of work and faces pension changes under church boards. They taught mainly in homes among a Muslim population, focusing on evangelism.

Junior High Students Urged to Register Thursday and Friday

Faces Trial Here for False Check

Gene McAlister faces trial in District Court on a charge of drawing and uttering a false bank check for 20. He allegedly cashed the check at Jack's Tavern Shenandoah Aug 15 drawn on Atlantic State Bank of Atlantic with no funds. He waived preliminary hearing and is held in Page County Jail on 200 bond. Twilah Mae Smith seeks divorce from Ernest L Smith in District Court. They wed Oct 22 1955 at Shenandoah. Vernon Johnson awarded 150.88 to Shenandoah Chamber of Commerce against Lyle Hargis for rent owed on an apartment. Shirley E Simons was granted a divorce from John L Simons and custody of a minor child. AME Minister Seeks Return to Clarinda Church

The Rev William Brewer, pastor for nine years, left for annual conference in Davenport this week.
