Shaw Captured After Escape From Nebraska Penitentiary
Paul Shaw, 24, an escapee from the Nebraska State Penitentiary, was captured near Norwich in Page County by Deputy Sheriff Tom Cumming and Shenandoah officers after a late night chase. Shaw, armed with multiple weapons, was subdued as the trio approached the parked pickup. He and his wife were detained. Shaw later fell ill and was hospitalized before transfer back to Lincoln for custody.

New Hawkeye Methodist to Reach Iowa Leaders
A new monthly Iowa Methodist publication, Hawkeye Methodist, will mail around Sept 1 to about 26,000 church leaders statewide. The tabloid format interprets program needs of Methodist institutions and conference boards for local churches, issued from the Iowa Area headquarters in Des Moines.

The Rev Lester Greenwood told the Clarinda Rotary Club that there is no illiteracy among Japanese people and described Japan's education up to the ninth grade with higher levels paid. Heavily Loaded Southbound Train Fails Over Grade
A southbound freight and passenger train near Clarinda could not clear the grade on the first trial. The consist included several freight cars a combination express and passenger car a weed control spray car and three loaded tank cars. The spray car in front coated the track making it slippery and traffic on Highway 71 paused briefly.

Family takes six day car tour to Europe from Wolfsburg

Voice tryouts at Clarinda High this week
Vocal music director Nelson E Crow announced open tryouts for Clarinda High School and Junior College students. Hours are 10 30 am to 12 noon and 1 15 to 4 30 pm Tuesday through Friday in the high school vocal studio. Last year 118 vocal students, with a goal of 100 girls and 60 boys this year.

Scroggs Lands 46 Pound Whitecat On Osage River Trip
Clarinda angler Bob Scroggs landed a 46 pound Whitecat using a spinning rod on the Osage River near Bagwell Dam. He fished with Clarinda Boat Club members and friends, battled for nearly an hour as 125 onlookers watched, and history was made as the biggest Whitecat taken by rod and reel at the site. He also hauled in an 11 pound Channelcat and a 25 pound Spoonbill, the latter struck by propeller during a return to shore.

Canton Member 90 Honored at Sept 18 Meeting
Canton plans a Sept 18 gathering in Clarinda to honor its 90 year old member Zeb Peterson of Afton, touted as perhaps Iowa’s oldest and possibly the nation’s. Joe Morrison of Clarinda, in his late 80s, will share honors as Canton members from Atlantic Shenandoah Council Bluffs and other towns attend the event.

Funeral services for C M Pendergraft formerly of Hepburn will be held Tuesday at 2 pm at Walker Funeral Home Clarinda. He died of a heart attack in St Louis Missouri. He is survived by his wife and a son Ronnie and another son and a daughter from a prior marriage. Interment planned in Clarinda.

Man Charged With DWI After Clarinda Highway Crash
A 44 year old B A Haner of Rockport Missouri was bound over to District Court on a drunk driving charge after a crash on Highway 2 ten miles west of Clarinda Saturday night. Deputy Tom Cumming said a pickup crowded cars, causing a car driven by Robert Cowan of Clarinda to roll over. Mrs Cowan was hospitalized with minor injuries. Mr Cowan and daughter were treated. The 1956 Chevrolet was demolished. Haner was arraigned before Justice R J McCurdy and expected to have a district court hearing this afternoon.
