Last Case of Oil Fever In Page County 1939 41

W G Osborne urges Page County exploration while cautioning against stock investments. Leasing surged to nearly 30 thousand acres by 1939 with multiple firms including Forest Developing and Ohio Fuel Supply. Wells near Hawleyville Shannon City and Charley Hook farm saw deep drilling, flooding, and eventual shutdowns by early 1941 with limited success and ongoing interest from Ohio Fuel and others.

Centennial Calhoon reunion noted in Clarinda

The Calhoon family marked a centennial observance of David Calhoon’s arrival in Page County at Wilhholm Hall Clarinda. Mrs Calhoon was named chairwoman for next year’s reunion. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Marvin Calhoon and extended family.

Farm Population Declining in Page County 1956 Census

Page County's 1956 farm census shows a 2 percent drop in farm residents to 6,014 from 6,146 in 1955. The number of farms fell to 1,784, average farm size rose to 189 acres, and total farm land increased to 337,270 acres with ownership at 53.4 percent. Corn and grain production rose, cattle marketed increased, and farm machinery and inputs adjusted downward in 1956.

Corn Loan Rates Set for Page County in 1957

Page County will offer corn loan rates of 1.33 per bushel for 1957 compliance corn, based on a national average of 1.36. Rates across Iowa counties range from 1.27 to 1.95, with Page County at 1.33. Loans mature July 31 and must be applied for at the county ASC office.

Plum Grove social notes and local marriages

The Helping Hand Club met August 15 with Ruth Cheshire. Visitors included Norma Melvin and Helen Joyce Merriott. Ruth Cheshire reported hospital treatment but returned home the same day. A couple, Edwin Dougherty and Anita Demott, married August 17 at Hopkins Christian parsonage and will live on Dougherty's mother's Plum Grove farm. Various local visitors and residents spent weekends with friends, and several households hosted guests from nearby towns.
