Angus calves top 4-H baby beef show at county fair

Jon Horel, 14, of Blanchard showed Smoky an Angus lightweight that won grand champion and breed champion at Page County Agricultural Fair. Eddie Wagoner, 12, Essex, claimed reserve grand champion with Blacky in the beginners class. Dennis Renander, 13, won multiple market pig titles, while George Currie and John Stephens led other livestock wins.

Southwest Iowa lawmakers clash with Gov Loveless in critique

A Shenandoah meeting of southwest Iowa legislators accused Gov Herschel Loveless of belittling Iowa in a California speech. They vowed monthly talks on state affairs and condemned vetoes impacting state institutions and mental health facilities. Senator Frank Hoxie led the group and praised three Republican Highway Commission members before planning a September meeting in Atlantic.

Eight Area Home Ec Teachers Attend Ames Meeting

Eight area teachers joined 305 Iowa high school home economics instructors at the 26th annual state conference held for four days at Iowa State College in Ames. Participants included Josephine Sherman Clarinda Col lege Springs Gertrude Hentsch New Market Mrs Lela Stites Essex Grace Updike Shenandoah Mrs Elizabeth Walters Nancy Jean Hawkins Villisca Mrs Corella Mason Bedford Barbara Fox. The event is run by the Division of Vocational Education with the Home Economics Education Department and the Iowa Home Economics Teachers Association. Winds of 200 miles per hour have been recorded in cyclones.

Junior Livestock Sale Totals 35196.24 At Clarinda Auction

Pace County Fair junior exhibitors earned 35196.24 for 218 head of beeves pigs and sheep at the Clarinda Auction Co sale barn. Top prices included 30 per hundredweight for reserve grand champion Angus shown by Eddie Wagoner Essex and 22.50 for six head of pigs by Essex Commercial Club. Clarinda Auction Co bought nine lambs at 19.50 per cwt. Calves sold for 31499.67 average 248.03 per head. pigs 3544.05 average 43.22. lambs 152.52 average 16.95. Reef buyers backed 4 H buyers to boost prices.

Big crowds filled stands at the Page County Fair in Clarinda for three nightly shows. A two hour variety performance Thursday included livestock parade, band concert, and skits led by Jim Borthwick. Weather threats failed to dampen attendance as Art Swenson's Thrillcade drew fans Friday despite chilly conditions.

Six sponsors named winners and prizes at the Page County Fair contests. American Cancer Society honored Mrs Charles Gillespie. Farm Bureau listed longest ear of corn Eugene Hartman and largest tomato winner Mrs William Mier Yorktown 2007. Amity Girls and Harlan Boys Lead Fair Demonstrations

Amity Learning Lassies and Harlan Hustlers 4-H clubs won the girls and boys demonstrations at Page County Fair and will advance to the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines next week. Senior girls champion is "Youre in the Dough" by Janice Bair and Sharon Nowels. senior boys champions are Lloyd McCalla and Lowell Wagoner for "Servicing an Air Cleaner."

Services Here Sunday For Henry A Logan

Funeral services for Henry A Dutch Logan 66 were held at the First Christian Church after his death Thursday night at Municipal Hospital following a year long illness. Born Savannah April 4 1891 he lived in Clarinda since 1912 and ran the Logan Studio now operated by son Dan. Survived by wife Hazel son and daughter in law D D Logan two granddaughters Sandra and Susan and brother Lavi Logan of Savannah. Interment in Clarinda Cemetery with Foster Harmon Williams Mortuary in charge. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.

Accident on N 21st St Damages Turner Pontiac Beyond Fifty

Police report details an accident on N 21st Street Thursday at 10 10 p m. Max Turner said he began to pass another car when his vehicle struck a concrete culvert hidden by weeds. Left front bumper fender and headlight were damaged. The other car fled the scene.

Amity Upperclassmen Enroll Friday For School Start

Supt J C Glenn calls all junior and senior high students to enroll Friday, Aug 23 after 2 pm. Freshmen and sophomores need not enroll in advance. Coach Walt Stanton will issue football suits and arrange physicals for all squad members. Teachers meet Saturday, Aug 31 at 2 pm. School begins Monday, Sept 2 with 11 30 am dismissal.

Eight Trophies at Clarinda Rabbit Show Set

A one day rabbit show in Clarinda on October 6 will offer eight trophies for top placers across several classes and seven cups for best opposition. Rosettes will accompany all other classes and ribbons awarded to places one through five. A large trophy funded by the Clarinda Rabbit Breeders Association will be won on a points basis. The Osborne Traveling Trophy applies to the three day spring show and is not part of the fall event.

Amvets open youth program as club closes in Clarinda

Clarinda Amvets announce plans to close their club rooms and build a new east of town with a shared grounds concept. They invite Boy Scouts and other youth groups to use a nearby field and cabin space, with a future camp area, while noting the bar is closed.
