The town of College Springs acquired the double Pollock building from Mr and Mrs Orville Meads and plans to convert it into a community hall. The north half housed the town’s former doctor’s office and flooring includes oak. Lions Club will oversee renovations including removing the partition and completing interior work.
Royal Neighbors met at Community Hall with Mrs John Woolsey hosting. New 50 star flag presented as a memorial to Mrs Glenn Fox by Irene Gillihan. Several members remarked on visits and travel plans including Anchorage wedding of Miss Geer and Leslie Breden.
The Siam Methodist WSCS met on Wednesday with Mrs Glen Stewart leading lesson and devotions. President Mrs Eva Thompson led the business session and next meeting will be with Mrs Onella Woldruff in Clarinda. Numerous relatives and friends visited local homes across Clarence Fine, Maryville, Omaha, Shenandoah, Clarinda, and surrounding areas, including Carl Stewart and the Woldruff family, with travel to Ohio and California noted.
Twenty four men from the State University of Iowa Iowa City join the Epsilon Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa professional fraternity for men in education. Jack D Brokaw son of Mr and Mrs Ralph Brokaw of Clarinda is among the new initiates.
Local newspaper announces reduced rate for subscribers, highlighting affordability compared to regional competitors. The lower price aims to boost readership and support community coverage.
Ken Jones told the Clarinda Lions Club that juvenile delinquency in rural southwest Iowa matches levels in large cities on a per capita basis. In four counties 81 cases have reached juvenile court this year, with 400 yearly average complaints, and 4 percent sent to state training schools. He urged parental education and community help to curb the trend.
Canadian 4-H youths from Weyburn visited Page County and were hosted by local families for six days. Letters of thanks poured in to Mayor Don Jillson and extension staff, praising planning effort and warm hospitality. The exchange leaders say the friendship will endure for years.
George Gerot, 3, of Riverside fell from a moving car driven by his mother while shifting from the back to the front at a sharp curve. He sustained head injuries with cuts requiring 50 stitches.
A student from Iowa joined a YMCA World Service work camp in Turkey to help build a sea wall a pier and a beach ramp near Istanbul. The letter from Roger Selley dated August 2 describes the trip from New York to Le Havre Paris Yugoslavia Bulgaria and into Turkey the camp life and the group’s aim to foster brotherhood through hands on construction and intercultural exchange.
Ivan and Leroy Moffitt, Braddyville natives, graduate from Northwest Missouri State Teachers College and Missouri University in Columbia respectively. Ivan earned a business administration degree after overcoming polio and farm life. Leroy earned a education degree with a math major and plans a master’s degree while teaching.
Miss Joan Rorebeck was feted at a bridal shower held Friday at the Coin community hall with 59 guests from Coin College Springs Northboro Blanchard Braddyville Omaha and Nevada. Hostesses and singers participated as gifts were opened. She will wed Ermal Nelson of Merino Colorado in September. Local guests and family from Lansing Hot Springs and St Joseph attended.
On August 16 the South Circuit gathered for a welcome picnic in Yorktown to honor Rev CD and Cla. Visitors included Mr and Mrs Ray Cox of Galveston Texas visiting relatives of Mr and Mrs William Herzberg. The Eichhorsts entertained honoring the Buss family from Grinnell visiting Clarinda relatives. Local merchants provide support for schools and churches.
A library feature highlights Glenn Kittler's Equatorial Africa teaching readers about its people wildlife and future with a six month Africa trip. It also covers Ivah Green’s Wildlife in Danger on endangered species and Adele Gutman Nathan’s The First Transatlantic Cable plus Electromagnetic Waves, emphasizing titles for children and the value of libraries.
Braddyville residents plan a benefit supper on August 24 at 7 pm at the church to cover tile and basement floor repairs. The WSCS met August 9 with Pauline Uhl and Mrs Cliff Bales in charge of worship and business. Several community members attended events and visits across Page County, with multiple families noted for travel, hosting, and hospital/visit activities.
The two major parties selected their State Supreme Court candidates by acclamation with Justice Larson of Iowa City and Justice Henry Peterson of Council Bluffs. Bruce Snell was named third nominee after defeating C Edwin Moore 2386 to 805, while Democrats renominated Harry Garrett and Maurice Rawlings with Edward L O’Connor also in the running. Rawlings led early but party unity shifted support to O’Connor as votes tallied. Supreme Court judges serve six year terms with three of nine elected biennially.
Des Moines events celebrate the Aug 16 ceremony for senior student nurses including Karen Sederburg RN of Des Moines. Attending relatives Mr and Mrs Sederberg, Dale Wallin and others joined the ceremonies before Karen's return home with her parents for a visit. She now resumes work at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Also noted are social visits by Hilmer Bloom family and Roy C Anderson party visiting Atlantic and nearby homes.
The Navy Recruiting Service offers former petty officers honorably separated in the last two years a chance to re-enlist for a two year tour as station keepers at nearby naval installations.
