Clarinda Heavy Mortar company of the 168th Regiment earned superior rating at Camp Ripley. Paul Ross of Priddyville won the individual proficiency test. Jan Masmar won last year. Ross flew to Chicago to attend the all star football game with Gov Leo Hoegh. One casualty Jack Cooper suffered a knee injury and was taken to the municipal hospital for surgery.

Storm Sewer 10 Requires Repairs In City
City reports deterioration of old storm sewers west of list Street along Main Street. Crushed 40 inch pipe sections are being replaced with 42 inch pipe after a hole near the intersection. Joints lack waterproofing, allowing soil intrusion and backfill pressure to crush sections under two houses. City foresees extensive repairs as many old sewers may be in similar condition.

Rites Wednesday for Vincent L Kaserman
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church for Vincent L Kaserman 38 vice president and manager of Cook's clothing store who died unexpectedly from a cerebral hemorrhage at Municipal hospital. He was born in DuBois Nebraska attended Shenandoah High School and Clarinda Junior College and served in the US Army 1943 to 1946. Interment followed in Clarinda cemetery with Foster Harmon Williams Mortuary in charge.

School board acts on gas coal bids
Clarinda school board opened bids for coal gasoline milk and remodeling the home economics department at the high school. Low bids for school bus gasoline came from Williams Service and the Clarinda Oil Co both 21.4 cents per gallon before tax. The board sent three of six buses to each station and tabled milk and remodeling bids awaiting more offers. A Thursday meeting with the architect for final inspection of the McKinley grade school building is planned with Victor Loebsack expected to represent Williamson and Loebsack.

Visiting Fireman Prevents Loss at Watson Truck Scene
Charles W Roberts of Safety 1st of Missouri, a visiting fireman, raced to a Watson Brothers truck blaze outside the west city limits and used a 125 pound dry chemical extinguisher and a new 2½ gallon pressurized water unit to halt the fire. The blaze could have caused total loss.
