Enrollment expected to rise as Clarinda schools open
The Clarinda Community School District plans for a new enrollment record when classes begin August 29 1960. Supt William A Anderson notes last year’s 1445 pupils across 26 districts and rural additions. The district operates eight buildings with 73 teachers and new facilities including added machine shop and language lab equipment.

Yorktown to open county school for retarded students
Definite plans are progressing for a Yorktown county school for retarded children. The Page County Board of Education has approval from the State Department of Public Instruction to establish and direct the special classes. Two teachers are qualifying for the state requirements and will attend a workshop in August. Parents of out of public school children may apply for enrollment.

Clarinda schools introduce Machine Tool and Die Design Technical for juniors and seniors, with 15 enrollment cap. The program aims to supply skilled machinists for regional industry, using machinery from Iowa Educational Surplus Agency and equipment shipments from St Louis and Des Moines. The shop at Municipal Airport is being converted to house the new course.

Clarinda College to Maintain Registration Levels for 1959 60
New Clarinda College dean Lawrence Sonneman says registration for the 1959 60 year should stay near last year. Freshman registration is set for Aug 23 and 24. sophomores register Aug 25 to Aug 27 noon. The school, formerly Clarinda Junior College, offers degrees and credits accepted by many four year colleges. A new physics course will be offered but the 11 month practical nursing course is not due to low enrollment, planned to resume in 1961. An adult education program starts Sept 26. housing and part time work are being sought for students.

School elections move to September under new Iowa law
The 58th General Assembly changed the election of local school board members from March to September beginning in 1960. Education leaders argued September elections allow new board members time to gain experience before budgeting and staffing decisions. Election plans must be adjusted to comply with the change in Section 277.1 of the 1958 Code.
