Auto crash leaves one dead six injured this Monday

Clarinda girl crowned Page County conservation queen at Shenandoah

Marcia Fidler 17, daughter of Mr and Mrs Eldon Fidler Route 4 Clarinda, was named Page County Conservation Queen at Benning's Cafe Shenandoah Friday night. Runner-up Karenann Falk will represent at the regional contest August 11 with the home talent show.

Elaine Cummings Crowned Miss Congeniality in Miss Iowa Pageant

Elaine Cummings of Bedford named Miss Congeniality by 33 contestants in the Miss Iowa Pageant at Clear Lake. Sally Neveille crowned Miss Iowa by Gov Herschel Loveless. Cummings to compete in Miss America in Atlantic City. First runner-up Joyce Rice and second runner-up Patricia Moore named. Cummings previously Miss Southwest Iowa 1961.

Clarinda PCA reports record 1960 loan volume

The Clarinda Production Credit Association issued $2.72 million in short and intermediate term loans in the first half of 1960, a record high and up 2.8 percent from a year earlier. Loans serve Page, Taylor, Adams, Montgomery, Fremont and Mills counties as farm mechanization and bigger farms expand. In Page County, Judge Harold E Davidson granted a divorce to Kenneth E Culbertson from Julia B Culbertson in District Court.

A Thursday error in the Clarinda Herald Journal misreported a petition against Art Gray of Hepburn. The Clarinda Oil Co had filed a suit in Page County District Court for an unpaid account against Mr and Mrs Arthur Gray. the paper apologizes for the mistaken "r" in Gray.

Funeral held Monday at Shum Funeral Home Bedford for I B Hutchinson 86 who died Friday at Municipal Hospital after an extended illness. Federal planning aid approved for Clarinda

Clarinda's application for federal and state planning aid has been approved. City Manager Walter Sales was notified by state planning director Ronald Gear. The city will receive 4100 in aid with 2050 from Iowa allocation via the US Housing and Home Finance Agency and 1025 from the Iowa Development Commission, requiring a 1025 local match for planning studies and capital improvement planning.

Mental Health Institute Receives $38000 Grant for Des Moines Clinic

Dr Karl Catlin superintendent of Clarinda Mental Health Institute announced a $38,000 allocation from the Iowa Legislative Interim Committee to fund a Des Moines clinic for 11 months. The grant funds a psychiatrist psychologist social worker and stenographer to serve Polk County patients and includes orientation at Clarinda before field work.

Hillside Park Development Moves Ahead This Summer

Hillside park, a 20 acre tract donated by the late L D Walker, near Highway 71, is undergoing a long term improvement plan. Foreseen upgrades include road work, shelters, bird houses and service centers for public use. A 7 member committee led by John Greenwood will coordinate additions such as tables, electricity and water for after sundown events, with access for church groups and picnics.

Lawrence J Sonneman named new dean arrival Friday from South Dakota assigned office August 8. He will live at 608 West Main Street after purchasing the late Mrs Alice Fillson home. Hiway 59 detour to end as paving nears completion

Southwest Iowa drivers will soon see the long detour map reduced as Highway 59 near Shenandoah is closed to Emerson but paving may be finished by week’s end weather permitting. A month of minor work remains along the new pavement before a continuous roadway is completed.

City Audit Details 1959 Funds and Bond Totals

The 1959 city audit by Dennis West shows total cash on hand and securities of 257 007.25 with bank cash 109 045.65. Bonds and securities held total 147 961.00 including hospital and cemetery funds. Major 1959 expenditures included salaries and parking meter revenue. State receipts included road tax and liquor profits. Outstanding bonds at year end totaled 467 000 with several specific issues. One minor discrepancy noted by the accountant.

Linah Rifat Habbab a 17 year old Jordanian from Bei rut Lebanon arrives in New York Thursday and travels to Omaha as the American Field Service youth guest of the Fred Sperry family for the year. She is five feet six inches tall and 135 pounds, fluent in Arabic with some Spanish and has strong interests in swimming cycling softball volleyball ping pong skiing and folk dancing. She has led Brownies and scouts and will study at a university in Beirut after her American year.
