New Market Saddle Club Wins Potato Race at Ak-Sar-Ben Roundup
New Market Saddle club team won the potato race at the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben Roundup in Omaha on Sunday. Members Don Cabbage Bill Fletcher Jack Yearous and Connie Fletcher highlighted the winning effort as about 20 horses competed in events including four in line barrell race and four leaf clover. Rites Set Tuesday for Mrs Cree at Gravity
Charlotte Lou Cree, 61, died Sunday at her Gravity area home after a lengthy illness. Funeral services are Tuesday at 3:30 pm at Gravity Methodist Church with Rev Howard DeVore and Rev Fred H Cowles assisting. Shums Funeral Home of Bedford handles arrangements. Burial in Gravity Cemetery. Survivors include her husband Orie and two daughters Mrs Max Shipley of Clarinda and Mrs Charles Huss of Gravity, plus several siblings.

The Rev Winfred A Schroeder of Honolulu will present a slide lecture on church work in Hawaii at 8 Paul's Lutheran Church in Yorktown Thursday at 8 pm. He leads Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Honolulu, whose membership grew from a few in 1950 to about 500, and he is brother of Yorktown preacher Sieg Schroeder. The Ladies' Aid sponsors the program and will provide refreshments after the lecture.

Clarinda junior golfers won the team title at the second Tri City Meet held in Shenandoah with a net score of 170 by five players led by Allen Frankel Chugger Nichols Phil Rogers John Segrist and Merrill Nelson. Shenandoah narrowly trailed 171 while Red Oak had 173. Individual ties surfaced with Nichols and Binan both 30s and a playoff deciding Clarinda winner. Pfander and Frenkel posted 44 in 14 15 division with Pfander winning after a putting playoff. Gary Lewis took 12 13 with 49 and Tom Lewis led 8 11 with 47. The next meet is August 12 at Red Oak country club.

Mortar Company Heads to Camp Ripley for Two-Week Training
The Heavy Mortar company with Capt Quentin Annan from Glenn Miller armory left at 5 am Sunday for two weeks at Camp Ripley Minnesota. The unit of 90 enlisted men and six officers traveled in 17 trucks and five trailers with full equipment and tents. They were joined by Company EK Shenandoah and Company F Red Oak and the Corning HQ. They planned to reach Camp Ripley by noon Monday and return to Clarinda around August 14. The camp schedule includes rifle and mortar instruction, mortar range, field problems, and usual competitions. Written correspondence should include rank name and serial number to Heavy Mortar Company 168th Infantry 34th Division Camp Ripley Minn.

Fisherman Drowns Near New Market on Farm Pond
Lester Safely a 72 year old Bedford man died Friday when his small boat capsized on a pond at the Novinger farm east of New Market. Ben Shannon 82 ran to the Novinger home with the news and Sheriff Lucas found Safely’s body with his head under the water. Safely had been fishing with Shannon who declined to boat. He was famed with Bedford brothers for Belgian horses and Guernsey cattle and left a wife and one brother near Conway.

City Council Seeks 9.45 Percent Increase in 1956 Budget
The city council, all members present, worked until 11:15 p.m. Friday to finalize the 1956 budget for a public hearing on Friday Aug 12 at city hall. The proposed tax rate rises to 2.62 mills, with 1955 taxes $121,025 and 1956 estimates $125,842. Adjustments cut $2,100, including dropping a $2,400 park recreation request and adding $300 to the public safety fund for porch removal at the fire station. The Municipal hospital asks $14,000 and a plan to use $5,000 of its surplus to retire part of $15,000 in bonds was discussed but no action taken. A temporary transfer of $5,000 was also discussed.

Pilot Unhurt After Spray Plane Lands In Tree On Farm
John Carder, a Red Oak farm spraying contractor, landed his Piper Cub in an elm after a field takeoff went wrong near Valley Township, Page and Montgomery counties. He escaped unharmed as helpers and a crane freed the plane while nearby power was cut for about an hour.

City Council appoints Don Drake as mayor
At noon Monday the city council voted to appoint Don Drake as mayor serving until a successor is elected at the next regular city election. Drake previously served as mayor until January 1954 when R L Criswell took office. under the present appointment Drake will serve until January 2 when the elected successor is sworn in under Iowa law. The late Mayor Criswell died July 25 and Councilman Bob Smith has served in his place since Criswell’s illness.

Farmers along a narrow north Page county strip reported two inches of rain Sunday from the Lorenz Sunderman farm, with others nearby noting one and a half inches at Manley Madden farm and as low as half an inch in Valley township. Some wind occurred and parts of the area saw bending but little corn damage.
