The Iowa City report notes 70 players turned out for the 1966 Iowa football squad as practice opened September 1 with optimistic drills. The team is picked by some to be the Big Ten door mat this season.
Kuehl, six months in law enforcement, resigns as Alburnett town marshal after uproar over youth and views on policing. He quits Sept 1 amid accusations of pay squeeze by Linn County Sheriff Grant. Later hired Sept 6 as Linn County jailer.
Electronics Technician James L. Gusta of Cedar Rapids serves aboard the destroyer USS James E. Kyes as part of Carrier Task Force 77. The ship supports attack aircraft with gunfire, torpedo attacks, smoke screens, and rescue duties. Also Airman Jimmy Barrow, returning from Vietnam, will be home thirty days before reporting to Templehof Airport in Berlin, Germany. Barrow says morale is high and supports the Vietnam commitment.
Record of a Cedar Rapids lifeguard from 1923 to 1939 credits Dick Zvacek with preventing 715 drowning fatalities. The feats took place as beaches operated by the county near the former jail site and Ellis Park on the waterfront.
