Sixteenth Firefighter Resigns From Cedar Rapids Department

A four year veteran of the Cedar Rapids fire department resigns this week becoming the sixteenth disgruntled firefighter to quit in fourteen months. William Smith leaves after four years citing low wages and plans to take a job as a pork driver.

Cedar Rapids city to rebid 168 old street lights

Parks Commissioner Don Gardner reported a mixup in sale ads for Cedar Rapids street lights. Bids on 207 fixtures were returned unopened after a count showed only 168 to be sold. A corrected advertisement will invite new offers for the right quantity.

Food Store Robbery Highlights Cedar Rapids Crime Wave

Cedar Rapids police describe a week of armed robberies as a pattern after an Armstrong’s department store heist. Two teenage gunmen robbed the Thrifty Food store at 9 p.m. taking about 160 dollars at gunpoint. Witnesses identified one as about 18 with blond hair and the other about 5'9" wearing dark clothing and police glasses. Warrants issued for the suspects. three arrests soon followed.
