Cedar Rapids City to Buy Park Land. Broker Set for $10,000 Fee

The Cedar Rapids City Council plans to acquire several parcels by Millers Pond for a park. A local broker and board member stands to earn nearly $10,000 as agent for the city in this land deal. Gardner optioned about $165,000 of muddy brush land for the project, with a six percent commission if the sale proceeds. Mayor Johnson has also served as city agent on other land purchases with commissions paid. An editorial questions the practice of hiring brokers for city representation.

Taxpayer group urges Cedar Rapids debate on city government form

Byron Bell spokesman for the Cedar Rapids Taxpayer's Association challenges Mayor Bob Johnson and city council to publicly debate commission form versus council-manager government after petitions call for a special election. The group plans a broad information campaign with films, speakers, literature, and a house to house effort to inform voters before election day. Bell, vice president of the association, insists voters will decide in an informed manner and supports adoption of city manager government.

Petitions Presented Date Set For C M Vote

Cedar Rapids City Council moved to place the proposal to shift from a Commission form to a Council Manager government on the ballot. Mayor Johnson set Tuesday September 7 as the special election date after petitions with about 3200 signatures were filed. Absentee ballots will be available about a week before the referendum.

Cedar Rapids to resurf ace loop streets bid plans

Bids will be accepted this month for a $161,000 street resurfacing project in the Cedar Rapids downtown loop area. A public hearing is set for August 25 with work to start early fall and finish in about a month, per City Engineer Dick Jensen.
