Toronto archbishop among new cardinals named by Pope
The Archbis hop of Toronto is among 21 new cardinals named by Pope Francis and the lone North American pick. Archbishop Francis Leo, 53, born in Montreal, has led Toronto since March 2023 after serving Montreal. He thanked prayers of the faithful and said he aims to be a worthy servant of Jesus as a cardinal and shepherd of Toronto. The consistory is set for December 8 with other appointees from South America and beyond. Cardinal Emeritus Thomas Collins of Toronto remains an elector until 2027.
