A 34 year old Thunder Bay woman died in hospital after her sport utility vehicle left Lakeshore Drive, struck a ditch, and caught fire. Police did not yet release her name and said the cause is under investigation. No other vehicles were involved. Contact OPP at 1-888-310-1122 with information.
Four professional bands will perform at the Shebandowan community centre grounds on August 10 reviving the Shebandowan Jam after a 12 year hiatus. Volunteers provide the sound system and the event aims to honor Otis Kesmarky with proceeds supporting the centre. Tickets cost 25 in advance or 30 at the door for 19 plus attendees.
The 51st annual Folklore Festival in Thunder Bay attracted thousands over two days at Fort William Gardens. Attendees sampled global foods, watched main stage dancing, and enjoyed a craft area and bouncy castles for children. The Chaban Ukrainian Dance group and Kaminari Wan Taiko Drummers provided performances.
A 20 year old Thunder Bay man died after a violent outdoor assault near Camelot Street and St. Paul Street. Police say a weapon was used but not a firearm. A 23 year old Thunder Bay man turned himself in and faces second degree murder charges. The pair were known to each other with history linking the attack. Investigators seek any further information at 807 684 1200.
Hymers Agricultural Society president Erin Laforest says security cameras were installed earlier this year on the fair grounds following reports of bonfires, vehicle driving, and ruts. Steel ropes and barriers deter vehicle entry during the off season as the Labour Day weekend fair, established in 1912, remains one of Canada’s oldest events.
