Northern Ontario SPUD unit receives 330000 boost for disease control

A joint provincial federal release funds the Superior Plant Upgrading and Distribution Unit in New Liskeard to install irrigation, filtration, heating and control upgrades. The SPUD facility supplies about 10 percent of Ontario seed potatoes and aids potato berry garlic sweet potato and hazelnut growers by improving disease detection and mitigation along the supply chain. Local farmer Darren Burgsteden notes government research helps avoid costly independent experiments.

Nish-NaNbe Aski Nation to elect executive council

Nish Naanbe Aski Nation verified nominations set an election period from Sunday through August 14. Incumbent grand chief Alvin Fiddler of Muskrat Dam faces Pauline Mickelson of Sachigo Lake and Bobby Narcisse of Aroland First Nation. Narcisse seeks deputy grand chief. challengers include Anna Achneepineskum of Marten Falls and Mike Metatawabin of Fort Albany. The vote occurs during the 42nd Keewaywin Conference at Constance Lake from August 18 to 15.

Mean Girls stage project raises funds for Our Kids Count

Staff and students from Superior College raise ten thousand dollars through Mean Girls High School Version. The school hosts its first full production as part of a fundraiser led by executive director Jackie Enough, with a second run planned in April at State and Vocational Institute.

Ontario injured workers urge ending 65 age cap on benefits

The Ontario Network of Injured Workers Groups urges abolition of the 65 year age limit for loss of earnings benefits under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act. They cite rising claims among workers 60 to 64 and 65 plus, and call on legislation to remove the cap.

Planes on display for Thunder Bay aviation events

Thunder Bay hosts two summer aviation events at the Wasaya Hangar July 5 to 7 and later in August to mark 100 years of the Royal Canadian Air Force and Ontario Provincial Air Service. A PBY-5A Canso aircraft, built in 1943, will be on tours.
