Local berries spark interest as Ontario farm marks 50th year

Thunder Bay area fans await picking in about 10 to 12 days at Belluz Farms, a Slate River Valley operation marking 50 years of growing strawberries. Spokeswoman Jodi Belluz notes a mild winter and recent heavy rain shaped the season, with berries usually ready the first week of July and three weeks of picking expected. Belluz contrasts local fruit with cheaper out of country options, stressing the local flavour and season.

Tbaytel Grants 30,000 to Five Northwestern Ontario Groups

Tbaytel for Good Fund awards 30,000 to five groups for 2024 community projects after 63 submissions region wide. Recipients include Pope John Paul II School Grade 7 transportation grants, Dryden Fire Service alarm installs, Rainy Lake Nordic Ski Club upgrades, Conmee Emergency Service life saving tools, and Whitefish Public School kindergarten enhancements. A judge panel led by Agnes Notarbartolo evaluated impact feasibility beneficiaries and budgets.
