Developer James Collie says Pennock Village, a 120 unit senior housing project on 28 acres near Highway 130 in Oliver Paipoonge, could start in 2025 if planning conditions and zoning enhancements are completed. Project may include assisted living. no municipal services exist yet.

Stamp salutes water-rights activist Mandamin in ceremony
Canada Post unveiled a new stamp honoring Josephine Mandamin, Anishinaabe elder and water-rights activist known as Grandmother Water Walker. The issue coincides with National Indigenous Peoples Day after a Thunder Bay ceremony. Mandamin co founded the Mother Earth Water Walks to highlight water pollution and Indigenous women’s duties as water carriers. She died February 22 2019 and worked with the Ontario Native Women’s Association in multiple roles including board director Grandmothers Council and executive director.

Reservists train under guard near Thunder Bay in Scotland Regiment march
About a dozen Lake Superior Scottish Regiment reservists were seen marching in full gear along Pole Line Road on Thunder Bay’s outskirts. Capt. Miguel Moldez of 38 Canadian Brigade Group said the soldiers were preparing for advanced training at CFD Dundurn near Saskatoon, with rifles unloaded during the brief public display.

McKellar Alumni Luncheon Celebrates Decades of Nurses
The 117th McKellar Alumni luncheon was held June 3 at Branch 5 Legion with 86 attendees including out-of-town guests from British Columbia Ottawa and Sault Ste Marie. The event honored milestone classes from 1959 1964 and 1969 and marked 53 years since McKGH School of Nursing graduated its last nurse, while planning for the 2025 reunion.

Thunder Bay adjusts parking rates after business backlash
Thunder Bay city council, urged by the Chamber of Commerce and local business groups, revised the new two dollar per hour parking fees. The new minimum is 50 cents for 15 minutes, with pro rated rates in metered lots and street spaces and 75 cents for 15 minutes at Market Square. Security measures for Waterfront Drive park include enhanced patrols lighting and possible cameras.
