Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced a stand alone motion to force MPs to vote on capital gains tax changes. The measure, outlined in a ways and means motion, would raise the taxable portion to two thirds for corporations and individuals earning over 250000 in a year.

Police arrested Joshua Christian Diamond, 39, of Thunder Bay, on second degree murder charges in the June 1 river park death of Francis Joseph Valle, 34. Diamond appeared in court and remains in custody with a future date set. Valle was found unresponsive at Kaministiquia River Heritage Park around 3 a.m. and later pronounced dead.

The 212.75 metre bulk carrier Mi chipicoten, owned by Lower Lakes Towing, struggled to reach Keefer Terminal after loading taconite at Two Harbors Minnesota. The vessel began listing and taking on water, prompting plans to tow to a dry dock in Duluth Minnesota or Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin.
Ty Brooks drilled a double for the Thunder Bay Border Cats in the Northwoods League game against the Duluth Huskies at Port Arthur Stadium. More than 2,800 fans attended including elementary students as part of the School Day event. The second School Day contest is set for June 19.
