Rare port fall overboard at Thunder Bay port during grain loading

A Kathy McKeil cargo crew member fell into the water at Thunder Bay as the ship prepared to load grain at Superior Elevator ULC. The person survived with no injuries, and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada sent investigators. Port CEO Chris Heikkinen called the incident very unusual and said the person's gender is not known. The vessel, registered in Hamilton and operated by McKeil, serves the Great Lakes and other routes.

Hostage Free After Thunder Bay Standoff On Cumberland Street

A hostage held on Thunder Bay's Cumberland Street North was able to exit the building after a morning weapons incident. By 3:30 p.m. a standoff with the suspect continued with Ontario Provincial Police assistance. Public urged to avoid Cumberland Street area with road closures on Tupper and Villa streets.

Northwest Ontario wildfires surge from lightning strikes

Severe weather across Northwest Ontario has sparked nearly 50 new forest fires. By July 2, 17 new starts were confirmed and 44 fires burn regionwide with 15 not under control. Red Lake 12 remains not under control, threatening Sandy Lake and nearby communities, as evacuees begin returning home with firefighters protecting infrastructure.
