Woman charged in deadly 2023 Highway crash near Thunder Bay

A 36 year old Red Rock woman Chelsey Kilar is charged with dangerous operation causing death operation causing death and operation while impaired in connection with a December 17 2023 three vehicle crash on Highway 11 17 near Mirror Lake that killed Monique Picard a 63 year old Longlac resident. Picard died hours after the collision at Thunder Bay hospital.

Fire safety game to become Indigenous app for northern youth

Former firefighter Shane Ferguson leads Staying Alive Fire Safety in adapting The Great Escape Game into an Indigenous version app. The project, funded by the Assembly of First Nations, uses elder teachings and seven sacred animals, aims for a fall release, and includes a national voice contest for Indigenous children. Ferguson will present at the 2025 Disaster and Emergency Management Conference in Gold Coast Australia to promote the app and share safety lessons.

Lakehead region conservation board balance cited

Basil said the flood protection aims to support sustainable communities and protect the environment. Conservation authorities were created to strike that balance. The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority is governed by a board from Thunder Bay and seven surrounding rural municipalities.

Muskeg Express back in Thunder Bay after repairs

The Muskeg Express at Centennial Park reopened after extensive track and wheel maintenance. Parks manager Cory Halvorsen said repairs include replacing back wheels with cast steel and using a new wheel material on the front. A ride safety review confirmed the plans, with operation set Wednesdays to Sundays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. weather permitting.

Indigenous Survivors Day Declared In Thunder Bay

Thunder Bay proclaimed June 30 Indigenous Survivors Day with a city hall flag raising and a Hillcrest Park sacred fire ceremony. City Indigenous relations manager Tanis Thompson and Fort William First Nation chief Michele Solomon described the day as a reckoning with colonial oppression, honoring resilience and urging truth and reconciliation alongside Canada Day. A letter from Troy Abramaitis of Lytton First Nation highlighted three generations of harm within Canada’s assimilation systems.
