Funders spotlight helps Northwestern Ontario startups grow
The Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre hosts Meet the Funders to connect start ups with funding and mentoring, highlighting programs for innovative projects in rural areas. Jeff Coull says awareness remains the main challenge as the non profit centre partners with provincial and federal agencies to support science, tech, manufacturing and agri food firms. The centre offers executive in residence services and helps refine pitches to secure capital. This year marks 25 years since the centre’s founding.

Artificial intelligence used in select probes
Thunder Bay police report on BriefCam use in three active probes since December including a homicide, a collision, and a missing person case. Det. Insp. Jeremy Pearson says training was thorough and the tool is user friendly and not used for live surveillance or facial recognition. The program requires four trained users and supervisor approval, saves hours by processing data quickly, and is used only when public interest outweighs privacy concerns. Investigators still rely on human review for evidentiary content.

Ontario shutters supervised consumption sites create hubs and housing
The Ontario government will close 10 supervised consumption sites by March 31, 2025 and replace them with 19 homelessness and addiction recovery hubs plus 375 housing units at a cost of 378 million. Nine sites are provincially funded and will be prioritized for funding if they surrender supervised consumption services. Nine Ontario sites face closure including Path 525 in Thunder Bay. several in Toronto Ottawa Kitchener Hamilton and Guelph. Local officials warn of increased overdoses and strain on first responders, while health workers fear losing daily access to care for clients.
