New Canal Bonds Move Forward Amid Debate in Senate

The final vote on a Nicaragua canal bill approved 70 million United States guaranteed bonds and 30 million non guaranteed bonds totaling 100 million for constructing the interoceanic canal. Treasury supervision and a fifteen member board govern the project with ten to be appointed by the president. The United States will own seventy million in canal company stock and hold a mortgage lien on all canal property.

Canal bill defeats amendments for old Nicaragua company

The proposed canal bill faced fierce opposition led by Mr Turpie as amendments to limit payments to the old Nicaragua company were defeated. A motion to require a complete survey by US engineers was also rejected. The bill passed with numerous senators voting aye and a cross section of nays.
