A wartime letter from Burrell dated August 19 1917 describes updates from the Champagne region. He notes slow mail, movement of packages, active anti aircraft guns, and a visit to the Lafayette Escadrille. He recounts baseball near the lines and expresses interest in aviation and Croix Rouge work.
The clerk of the district court lists new civil actions including Guy C. Steere versus Earl Barrett attachment filed Sept 27 Houck and Cleland versus Joan M Graves abstract of judgment filed Sept 28 Matting Krettler versus Adam P Scholl suit on note filed Oct 1 Rivera Templeton Lumber Co a corporation versus Mrs E Stover and K A Kliew filed Oct 1 John M Hamilton versus Albert E Brunson suit to quiet title filed Oct 3
Louis O. Skov aged 51 and Anna Eliza Erickson aged 47, both of Conrad, obtained marriage licenses.
Arthur D. Fisher, of Blackleaf, died from injuries after a collision with a car driven by Thomas Manix near the Cowgill place on the road to Bynum. Manix was arrested. bail set at 2000. coroner’s inquest found Fisher died from being struck by Manix’s car.
Judge H B Ewing presided Saturday as several applicants gained United States citizenship including Jacob Belke Eskild Hyland Mathew Cooper and Josef William Wooster. Others were continued due to non appearance or war and several cases heard including three divorces and a larceny dismissal.
District Court records show a change of venue to Cascade County in the case F F Lewis against J A Reed. The State of Montana versus Chrisian Johansen pleads not guilty to second degree assault with bail set at 250 and trial set for October 6. Edward Wood pleads guilty to grand larceny for stealing a horse and receives a two to four year sentence suspended on probation. Eldon Murphy charged with forgery pleads not guilty with bail 1000 and trial set for October 6. W G Carrington charged with forgery pleads not guilty with bail 1000 and trial set for October 8. Melvin D Mull versus Belle Mull.
State Senator T. O. Larson received a telegram announcing his appointment as chairman for Teton county in the second liberty loan campaign. The drive begins next Monday and public meetings will be arranged with dates to be announced.
The church invites all communicants to prepare for the Holy Communion on the first Sunday of October. Services begin promptly at 10 45.
The C M St P railway depot at Chateau was opened to the public with a Red Cross fundraiser last Monday evening. Mayor James Eckford praised local efforts, Great Falls officials spoke on cooperation, and Scott Leagitt delivered a patriotic address amid dancing, music from Holland's orchestra, and a Red Cross lunch. The event raised over 1400 for the Red Cross fund.
