Three counties still must file petitions to refer preferential presidential and the new state primary laws to voters in the next general election. So far 22 counties have submitted, with 16 949 signatures for Referendum 15 and 16 817 for Referendum 16.

Senator T C Larson discusses the mercantile driven origin of the trade commission law, saying merchants backed the bill after a merchants committee stated it would not harm honest merchants. He blames the merchants committee for any unfairness and notes the bill passed with broad merchant support while order four on marking costs would burden consumers.
Helena reports Montana issued 323 farm loans totaling 3 38 670 from the common school fund for July to December. The abstract department speeds loan abstracts to the attorney general. By January 15 nearly one million dollars may be available for farm loans.
Washington reports the unconditional release of Harry V Learnard and Harry O Martin, crewmen on the steamer Pocomoke, arrested in Mazatlan November 12 for allegedly assaulting a Mexican. The American consul at Mazatlan says there is no basis to claims of neglect and states every effort was made in their interest.

Smith on another day. Mr. and Mrs. J. Wy Kerr returned from an extended Eastern trip. P. G. Anspach and family visited the Kerr ranch. Miss Viviaings Stenson rode in from Great Falls to visit.

Borrowers repay on easy terms with the government insured against loss by a lien on property. The plan aids drought or calamity stricken farmers in replanting after the war.
Deputy Sheriff Martin Read returned yesterday from Oklahoma with Earl Halladay in custody after he was arrested on a Fairfield banker’s complaint for issuing a false financial statement securing a large mortgage. Mrs Adams and daughter Miss Kitty of Sun River are guests at the J C Morgan home.
