A fire at the Choteau House hotel started in the basement boiler room and burned toward the roof before the fire department and townspeople contained it after about an hour. Despite a strong wind and cold, the building suffered only minor damage, estimated at 1500 dollars with no insurance due to high rates.
Charles Ray brings his new Thomas Ince production Crooked Straight to the Royal Theatre Wednesday. The country boy turns to crime in the city, redeems himself in a dramatic finale, and wins a hometown romance after tragedy in the story reminiscent of The Busher.
Marguerite Clark stars in Luck in Pawn, a Parmount Artcraft film about a young rich idler harassed by designing women chasing his money. The piece notes the millionaire’s weary outlook and hints at the social comedy surrounding his choices.
The First M. E. Church invites worshippers to sunrise devotion at 6 30 and regular morning service at 10 00 with baptism infant and adult and reception of members. On Saturday April 3 two or more candidates will vie for each school trustee office. For the three year seat S T Wiprud seeks the term now held by E N Haugen while James S Innes deputy county clerk runs for the two year post currently held by J C Morgan who seeks re election. A special ballot asks voters if the board may levy three mills for teachers salaries and completing the city of Choteau school building beyond the regular ten mill levy.
Civil actions announced with Libby Yards Co suing Louis Barringer filed March 26. R W Johnson v C H Asselstine Jr on note filed March 29. Corporation Loan Co suing J P Trainor foreclosing mortgage filed March 31.
Pendroy School District 21 opens a modern two story building with basement and play rooms. Attendees include Miss Gitchel and Mrs Holm, P. P. Swanson, Major L. A. Foot, J. M. Roth, and others. address themes center on Americanism and duty.
Chateau public schools plan Easter vacation on April 9 and 12 to honor Lincoln and Washington. Seventh grade led attendance last week with 99 percent. Residents urged to vote next Saturday April 3 on higher teacher salaries and finishing last year’s addition. APTA meeting set for Tuesday at the high school auditorium with an exhibit of 200 paintings planned for April in the Larson block. A theft of keys from Mr Burgett’s desk was reported with a reward offered.
At a faculty meeting the spring activity plan lists events from April 9 to May 7 including a senior play April 9 and 10 dances, April 16 trustees banquet, April 23 glee club recital, May 2 baccalaureate sermon, May 5 class day, May 6 and 7 graduation and junior prom. Twenty five boys sign up for track. Wardella Redmond left for Wyoming. Extra day to be made up. Saturday will have school. Senior class rehearsals for the play and declamation practice with ten entries, likely more.
A. F. and A. M. announce no meeting of Chateau Lodge No. 44 on Wednesday evening April 7 due to the visit of the Grand Commander of Knights Templar of Montana to Bethany Commandery.
Great Falls March 27 No extensions of the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul railway system will be undertaken during the present year according to H B Earling vice president of that company while in the city on an inspection trip with a large party of officials He said the company had no funds for extensions and did not expect any railroad building of consequence in 1920.
