Marketing and Drought Pressure Ranchers Across Montana
Montana ranchers face tight markets after a beef price freeze and a severe drought. Feeder cattle may drop in price once marketed, while fat cattle could rise, says Pat Goggins of the Western Livestock Reporter. Drought harms feed and irrigation, with 20 western counties declared disaster areas. Hay and cattle thefts have doubled, prompting added brand division staff to curb rustling. hunters are discouraged to deter thieves.

Nitrate Poisoning in Montana Forages Warns Extension Experts
Montana extension specialist Roger Brownson warns that drought damaged crops and stress of forages raise nitrate levels in feeds. High nitrate can cause methemoglobinemia, leading to reduced oxygen in blood, abortions, or death in cattle and other ruminants. Farmers should test forages and send samples to Montana State University for analysis.
