Early fall snow cuts power and traffic across state
A severe early fall snowstorm last Friday and Saturday left a wake of destruction from Fairfield to Chateau. The Montana Power Company faced extensive line and pole damage, cutting power for three days and forcing crews to splice hundreds of wires. Water and fire safety measures were strained, schools closed, and residents relied on candles and baking powders as bread supplies dwindled. Sheep perished in the Sun River canal, and other regions reported damaged power lines and temporary communication outages. Earthquake-like shocks were felt in Gallatin County with no damage reported.
