92 Year Old Agawam Ranchman Still Very Active

The town notes a 92 year old Agawam ranchman still vigorous in work and hobbies. His 92 year old father, a former homesteader on the Porter bench circa 1910, remains active on the ranch, helping with chores and occasional heavy labor.

Attendance Emphasis at Choteau Grade School

The Choteau Grade School faculty urges perfect attendance, except illness, and asks parents to provide written excuses on return. Students may not enter before 8 45 a m or 12 50 p m. lunchers remaining at school need a note for downtown errands. Teachers seek parental visits to foster strong home school ties.

Security official set to visit Chateau for welfare office meeting

J Almer Reed of the Great Falls Social Security Office will be in Chateau next Thursday September 27 at 3 00 p m at the welfare office in the courthouse. He warns that lack of information leads to failure to file for benefits and loss of money to families and invites anyone with questions to attend or call at that time.

Barney McClue Freed From Jap Prison Camp

News from the Great Falls Tribune confirms Barney McClue, Choteau native and nephew of the Huffman brothers, has been liberated by Americans and relocated to Melbourne Australia before en route home. the report notes his participation in the bataan and corregidor defense and details years of uncertain fate as a prisoner of war.

SGT Henry Erickson Home After 15 Months POW Camps

Sgt Henry Erickson son of Mr and Mrs Louis Erickson of near By num was seen on Chateau streets after returning from 15 months as a prisoner of war in Germany and Austria. He served as an engineer on a bomber forced to land in Austria in February 1944 and was liberated in April near Munich. He arrived in New York in June and plans to go to Fort Douglas for discharge papers after furlough.

Choteau Visitor Urges Remembrance of Hanford Bomb Plant

Burt D. Wells, civilian employee with the U S Army engineers, recalled the Hanford project in Washington where the atomic bomb plant reached peak employment of 78 000. He described disposal of excess property and a 2 200 truck shipment, while noting his return to Portland for rivers and harbors work.

Condition Improves for Roy Anderson at Deaconess Hospital

Additional Locals reports from Deaconess hospital in Great Falls indicate Roy Anderson’s condition is more favorable though still serious. Mrs. Willa Nelson, Mrs. Pauline Keys, and Mrs. Minnie Campbell of Cut Bank left for Minneapolis and other places on a buying trip. Miss Josephine Harrisson of Great Falls left after a brief visit to attend the funeral of Mrs. Charles Monkman and to visit friends. she formerly taught at Teton County High School and Great Falls High School.

Teton Hi Lites Election Results and Freshman Dance

Teton Hi reports senior elections led by Stan Stott and Hazel Bleecker, with 23 seniors and two more to enroll. Juniors chose Joe Bush as president and plan a gym dance for freshmen on Friday. Sophomores elected Clifton Swanson, Jack Fahey, John Rose, Harold Hinman, and Geraldine Lindseth as the only girl on cabinet. Freshmen elected Red Woodward as president with more results to follow. An initiation week included a mock march, gym activity, and housewife chores as part of TPT cheer club formation. Episcopal Guild to meet Sept 27 at Mrs. H T Redmond’s home.

Pioneer Mary Monkman Ends Long Montana Life

Mrs Mary Harriet Monkman 76 widow of Charles Monkman died Sept 15 at Chateau hospital after a long illness. Born in Bolton Ontario she married in 1890 and moved to Montana homesteading near By num then Choteau. Survived by six descendants including Gordon Monkman county treasurer and Choteau postmaster Gibson Monkman. Funeral held at Incal Methodist church with Rev Bert Powell officiating.

More Boys Enrolled Than Girls In County Schools

A 1944-45 survey by Mrs. Muriel Reiquam shows in Teton County nine one room rural schools with 77 students 46 boys and 31 girls one two room rural school with 45 students 24 boys and 21 girls six elementary graded schools enrolling 798 students 421 boys and 377 girls four high schools totaling 390 students 197 boys and 193 girls Eleven men and 15 women teachers served across the schools a total of 38 schools operated last year.

Teton County Sportsmen's Association revival planned

Dormant during the war the Teton County Sportsmen's Association will be revived with a meeting at the Jackson barber shop in Choteau next Wednesday at 8:00 p m. The group originated as Chateau Rod and Gun club and later became the Teton County Sportsmen's Association about 12 to 15 years ago.
