Augusta Guide Freed by Jury On Elk Charge
Emil Klick a Augusta guide and outfitter was found not guilty by a jury in Justice Irwins court after a hunting incident at Elk Hill on Elk Hill where one elk was tagged by Claire Towne and another elk remained untagged leading to Klicks arrest for a game law violation. Witnesses said John Hogenson killed the untagged elk but did not tag it due to his jacket containing his license being left at camp. The trial was attended by game wardens and deputies.

Seven Fairfield burglaries tied to Augusta suspects
Two Augusta residents and seven Fairfield businesses were burglarized Sunday night using a heavy screwdriver to pry doors and windows. Donald E. Syverson and Robert E. Foster were arrested near Augusta and held on related charges as investigators link them to subsequent break ins in Drummond, Deer Lodge, Townsend, and Helena.

The Phillips-Yeager well, 12 miles southwest of Chateau, found a slight showing of oil and gas in the Swift formation at 4,470 feet. Drillers awaited the corehead to core and test the Swift at noon Wednesday. The Madison limestone top lies about 200 feet below the Swift, and should be reached within a few days, a key step for Montana production.
