Butte Boy Builds Working Model Airplane at Home

Leslie Hill of 910 West Galena Street Butte crafts a Fokker style model 18 inches long with an electric motor and linen wing. The engine and wing were improvised from common parts, carved and assembled over months, inspired by his eight year old son’s fascination with airplanes. The model sits on a pedestal in the Butte Chamber of Commerce window and runs at over 20 miles per hour. Hill, a chauffeur for the Butte and Superior Mining company, began the project last February after studying aircraft at airports and through his brother’s links to English aviation history. He has long been active in local sports and served as scorer for the Butte Baseball Association.
