Ross D. Houck former Choteau resident and building contractor died in Salt Lake City on Friday morning October 27 from a heart attack. He moved from Choteau to Salt Lake City in 1924 or 1925 and returned to visit friends, with his last trip this spring. Funeral services were held Sunday October 29 at Deseret Mortuary in Salt Lake City and he was buried at Salt Lake Memorial Mausoleum. He is survived by his widow Alma Kingsbury Houck and daughter Mrs. Roy W. Marsh, both of Salt Lake City.
Three hundred seventeen hunters checked out at the local station by Wednesday morning reporting 41 elk 25 deer 8 goats and 4 bear. Four deer and one calf elk were reported this week in Teton Canyon.
Mrs L H McLean wife of former forest ranger dies suddenly at Baker Guest Ranch in Teton Canyon. Funeral held in Lewistown with burial there. She traveled with husband and daughter Jean on vacation and hunting trip. She died Monday night after a heart attack. coroner and sheriff investigated. husband and two sons Hugh and Robert survive.
Friends learn Johnnie Winters is out of danger at Great Falls Deaconess Hospital after a kidney puncture from a broken rib caused severe bleeding. He received a blood transfusion Tuesday evening, with Banks’ ambulance and potential donors Stan Smith and Johnnie Nordhagen.
John D Stout of Lowry enlisted in the United States Army on October 26 for service with the Air Corps with station at March Field in Southern California. He applied through the Great Falls Recruiting Office on October 24 and was tentatively accepted, then formally enlisted at Fort Missoula and sent to his chosen station.
At a regular meeting on Monday night the city council approved two permits. Larry Sweetman may build a filling station on Hazlett's addition blocks 25 through 28, across from the Glenloyd Hotel, with a $2500 expenditure. Mrs Edna Stephens is granted a permit to construct an addition to her residence.
The Choteau Post No 6 American Legion will stage Armistice Day ceremonies at the Masonic temple at 10 a m with Mrs Geo E Chambers national vice president of the Legion Auxiliary and Ruby Miller Cha teau Public School principal as speakers on The American Legion and Education The event will conclude with an Armistice dance at Mountain View Gardens sponsored by the Legion and a special lunch arranged by the Ladies Auxiliary.
Teton's Oldest Settlers plan their annual gathering at the Mason ic temple on Tuesday November 28. Banquet at 7 p.m. costs 75 cents per plate with 1.00 annual dues. Executive and membership committees named. membership rules require Montana residence 30 years and Teton county 10 years with applications due by November 25.
An agreement among Chateau merchants to close all day Saturday for Armistice Day observes a general holiday in the town. Shoppers are advised to complete errands beforehand as a town trip then would disappoint. Closures include Penney's Wedum's Bloom's Grocery Choteau Meat Co Chuck's Locker System Safeway Sturgis Hardware Choteau Food Market and Choteau Hardware. restaurants filling stations and drug stores stay open while the bank and courthouse close for the national holiday.
George S Therrien 77 pioneer stockman and rancher died after eight months illness from a heart attack in Bynum Montana. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church in Chateau with burial there. He was born in Quebec in 1862 and later lived in Dupuyer Missoula Cut Bank and Bynum. Survived by widow Minnie Garrow two daughters Aline Lagrand Annette McNutt and two sons George J and Charles plus three step sons and several siblings. He was noted as the first white man to cross the Rocky Mountains divide with a wagon and team.
The Great Northern stock run will return to its regular Tuesday schedule at 3 30 p m after a pause this fall. Agent C H Porter announced the resumption. Substantial stock has been shipped this fall to Chicago St Paul Sidney and North Dakota points along with Montana locations.
Helena call reports the Peterson Billings sheriff contest remains under advisement after two weeks of hearings. Clerk A V Porter says the supreme court justices are deliberating but busy, with a decision expected soon.
Community planning committees completed meetings in all county areas to discuss the 1940 unified county program. County agents Willson Halverson and Hansen outlined action lines, weed district plans, and an intensive grasshopper control campaign with bait spreaders. Committees for Bole Collins Diamond Valley Pendrey Bynum Power Chateau Dutton elected and tasked with implementing the plan. Dutton attendance topped with 40.
A meeting of the Little Theatre Group was held at Mrs. Prank Stearns home Monday evening. Miss Ellingson spoke on Speech Consciousness and voice control. Mrs. Leigh Nett reviewed Susan & God and Mrs. Hammond discussed the Great Falls Passion Play. A lighting discussion followed with news of theater and plans for makeup and The Little Foxes review next month.
About 75 listeners attended the Tuesday evening address by former Congressman Jerry O Connell at the courthouse where he promoted the 60-60 pension plan. A 60-60 club formed with officers chosen in a casual, desultory way.
Choteau I O O F lodge held its regular meeting Tuesday night with a visit from brothers from Great Falls and Valier. The Choteau drill team conferred the Initiatory degree on a local Dove and one from Valier, continuing a traditional initiatory ceremony.
