Captain Fisk's 1863 Escort From Minnesota To Bannack City
In spring 1863 Captain James L. Fiske led a emigrant escort from Fort Abercrombie toward the upper Missouri to avoid Sioux danger. The trek passed Fort Ripley, Mouse River, Bannack, and Virginia City, with encounters including Red River hunters, Assinniboine diplomats, and a return crossing of diverse tribes. The voyage ended with arrivals at Bannack on September 28 and a sale of stock before moving to Virginia City. The journey featured no deaths, desertions were pursued, and a final salute welcomed Fisk and his company.
