The letter dated February 17 from Captain L A Foot describes training at a machine gun school and teaching new tactics to his regiment. He writes of a pleasant French town billets, mild weather, a concert for French children, hospitable locals, and a view from an old château. He mentions Easter parade duties and a collective wish to finish the war and return home.
Community notes list sewing room workers by date with chairmen and cutters for May 16 to May 21 and gauze workers roster. Memorial day committee announced for Red Cross with parade as main feature and junior auxiliary role. Local children held camouflage circus raising 21.00 for Red Cross. tips on proper handling of proceeds and thanks to supporters and organizers.
Church services by Rev. L. F. Haley will be held at the school house on Sunday afternoon May 26. Observances include patriotic songs and a memorial day sermon. All are cordially invited.
County Red Cross campaign under T O Larson progresses in good shape with all localities likely oversubscribed. Local committee J J Greene Frank Oulton and Dr H J McGregor report receipts totaling 1842 dollars and ten cents from subscriptions and business may support oversubscription.
George Richards died in a city hospital last Friday and was buried at Chateau cemetery after funeral services at the Methodist church led by Rev. W. E. Hall. Born in St Ives England May 16 1834 he crossed to the United States in 1844 and lived in North Carolina Montana and finally Choteau. He married Lena Kountz August 3 1878 and left six children Thomas George Ellen William Alfred and Clara with several grandchildren. He engaged in mining ranching and merchandising throughout a long career moving from Belmont to Choteau and later to Priest Butte remains.
Teton county board lists six stock raisers for veterinary corps at Camp Le Petersburg and one horse trainer for quartermaster corps at Camp Joseph Johnston. Named registrants include Roy Alder Hudson Browning George Washington Pace Harl Graham Danbury Ray Edgar Thomas OGrady Louis John Oestreich Ray Winford Embody.
Memorial Day exercises planned at Chateau involve Red Cross auxiliaries from Bole Bynum Agnew Fairfield Farmington Pendrey Power. Junior Red Cross contingents from these towns will march in a 1:30 p m parade from the public school grounds, led by the Chateau band, with services at the courthouse at 2:30 p m.
The town council appointed W. B. Butchart as town treasurer and Judge J. B. DeHaas as fire chief. The mayor may hire someone to census the town, and if population reaches 1000 Chateau could be upgraded to a city of the third class. Sprinkling of streets was discussed and arrangements authorized. A fence project on the north side of the street from the transformer to Second Ave was approved to curb lawn damage from stock crossings.
Residents enjoyed a patriotic parade led by Uncle Sam and the Chateau band followed by Red Cross floats and marching groups. Dr. Maria L. Sanford of Minneapolis gave a well attended lecture at the high school auditorium with proceeds to the Red Cross.
A Montana resolution passed May 20 calls for six wheatless weeks until July 1 with home baking using no wheat. Victory bread may use the current wheat percentage. Speakers include F E B Cullen and Alfred Atkinson. officials urge strict sugar and meat economy as wartime necessity.
Word from Missoula reports Lieutenant Thomas C. Spaulding former forestry professor at the State University wounded in French trench fighting. A cannon fragment pierced his leg near the bone but he is said to be progressing well. Spaulding previously served on the border with Mexico and supervised the Lewis and Clark forest station at Chateau.
The Child Health conference at Chateau progresses with around eighty children registered for examination. Local nurses and doctors conduct the work after Miss Rue Baxter, named nurse in charge, could not attend having joined the Red Cross. State scoring of records will follow, with results sent to Helena and then to mothers. The program features strong attendance and a full report is promised next week.
Citizens and resident males aged 21 to 31 must register between June 5 and June 6 1918 with local boards in Montana. Exemptions apply to those in U S military service. Registrars for Teton county include C C B Jackson H R Jones John Zimmerman A S S Truscott and others with locations from Chateau to Glacier Park. The piece ends noting the Crown Prince is in the drive and achieving little.
